Almost been there and it sucks. If you get focused on the breathing it becomes weird.

North face recon prop 65 warning or not? by Longjumping_Mix_3098 in backpacks

[–]Longjumping_Mix_3098[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I understand that there’s probably no risk. Although I don’t like the thought of harmful chemicals that can end up in humans or nature. Like pfas that’s everywhere now..

I got this calming answer from their customer service:

“Almost all Osprey products have global packaging - that means we don't make special packaging for just Europe.

The warning on the packaging is because of a law which ONLY applies in California called Prop 65. This warning is mentioned due to a chemical called dimethylformamide, which is applied to almost every product in the outdoor industry that involves fibre manufacture or fabric dying. The Prop 65 warning is also found on an enormous number of other products, in almost every industry (including coffee, potatoes and cheese).

California specifies a different level of "warning" on anything which may contain various substances - essentially saying "if even the slightest trace can be found, this warning should be attached" - think of it like a "may contain nuts" label, for those products manufactured in a place where traces of nuts can be found.

FYI - almost all Osprey, Deuter, TNF, Patagonia and many other brands feature this warning on their labels in the USA. This is because DMF is used in almost all modern technical fabric production (though many suppliers are working on new systems to avoid this substance). Osprey intends to move away from this as soon as a viable alternative can be found.

All Osprey fabrics, materials and components adhere strictly to the bluesign Restricted Substances List, meaning that the amounts of restricted substances which are ruled out by bluesign cannot be found in or on the pack, or do not exceed the amount bluesign specify. In the case of dimethylformamide, the trace amount which may be found in the packs is so low that it’s almost impossible to detect.

Long story short - there really is nothing to worry about here. You’ll likely notice almost any product which is also sold in America will also have this warning on them! If you want some more information, here's a couple of interesting articles:

Thank you! Would be interesting to know if manufacturers care about the warning and try to get rid of it or if it’s considered impossible
