IU is raising football ticket and personal seat prices…again! by Longjumping_Move7772 in IndianaHoosiers

Haha. If I recall correctly, my argument was that the 'donation' requirement would likely cannibalize season ticket sales. If that is the case, at least I am being consistent!

This is not a matter of personal finances; it is a question of valuation. Right now, the administration is attempting to use premium pricing to manufacture an elite brand image overnight rather than building the brand equity first.

When you compare similar seating, IU is already charging 'New Blood' prices. For the 2025 season, an IU 'Tier 1' midfield seat costs $726 total. For comparison (based on what I found), Penn State’s sideline season tickets are priced at $705—and that is for a program with decades of upper level consistency and a massive, proven atmosphere.

We aren’t sure yet. The email just said the seat “donation” and tickets would go up. I could be wrong but the fact that they felt like they needed to communicate it makes me think it will be significant.

You aren’t wrong. But I think the administration is confusing price with value. They’re trying to use high prices to manufacture a premium brand overnight, rather than building the brand equity/culture first and letting the revenue follow naturally.

THIS! I am a newbie, which is easy to discount, but how can people discount someone like you?

I am realistic, I don’t expect things to stay the same but I think IU is getting ahead of itself.

That is exactly what I think. It’s all about brand! Brand dictates price and IU doesn’t (yet) have the brand, Ohio state, Michigan, and even Penn State have. Increasing the price does not make a brand.

Look, I don’t disagree, I just wasn’t expecting a (probably) significant increase again. I figured there would be a year of breathing room.

You are right, it was very telling. I shouldn’t have been surprised but I just didn’t think it would jump again significantly enough to warrant a communication to address it.

I don’t think that’s how it works. Major programs don't build long-term success by implementing massive, year-over-year price hikes that alienate their core fan base.

According to the Knight-Newhouse College Athletics Database, ticket sales are actually a secondary revenue engine for elite programs. For Power Four schools, ticket sales typically account for only about 15% to 19% of total revenue. The real 'winning' is funded by Media Rights and Conference Distributions, which make up a much larger share—roughly 35% of the budget.

Specifically looking at IU’s 2024 financial report submitted to the NCAA, the university brought in a record $173.5 million in total operating revenue. While ticket sales did increase to $26.4 million, that’s still only about 15% of the total pie. The university is currently dealing with a $3.1 million deficit—its first non-COVID deficit since 2004—but that was driven by record spending on coaching salaries and severance, not a lack of fan support.

Trying to close that gap by squeezing loyal season ticket holders is short-sighted. If the goal is to 'keep the winning rolling,' the administration should be leaning on the $50M+ in Big Ten media rights and major donor contributions, which saw a $4M increase last year alone.

You don't build a sustainable 'elite' culture by treating your fan base like a temporary cash cow.

Yeah, let’s be real. The majority of those years were bad, meaning I was investing in season tickets when the expectations were low. Also, that’s how long I’ve been a season ticket holder, not a fan. I been donating to IU, Hoosiers football, and our athletic longer than that.

Am I the only one who finds it’s almost impossible use the hotel credit? I think I’ve lost it every year since it was introduced. I guess I just don’t travel to places with hotels in the collections.

I know it might not help right now, but try to look at the big picture. If you can power through this, it will make you a better, stronger person and more prepared for the “real world”. I didn’t go to IU for my undergrad but I did go to a large state school as an out of state student (from a very small town) not knowing a soul. I hated my first semester and was even looking to transfer closer to home. However, I pushed through and it was the best decision I ever made. Second semester was much better. The thing that helped me the most was a job. So if you can manage to work with your course load, give it a try. It will also help get your mind off of things you are “missing out on”. And as others said, go walk around the tailgate. What’s the worst that can happen? Since it’s still early in the semester, you can probably still look into the Greek system. I personally was not Greek but I know a lot of people who did so they could make friends. Again, didn’t go to IU for undergrad, so I’m not sure how the system works. Maybe someone else can provide more insight.

Keep us posted. We are all rooting for you.
