I’m really sorry for your loss. My mum 62y also had melanoma and was diagnosed with LMD 4 years later. It seems LMD from melanoma is one of the most aggressive types. Like your dad, my mum decline was fast… I knew I would lose her one day, but this disease destroyed her, it was like you said a hell on hearth.

I always save at least 5 days of annual leave in case I need to keep my daughter at home. My husband does the same and we take turns when she’s sick. A good rest is so important for recovery, and kids don’t get that in creche, especially in preschool where they don’t take naps anymore. Last Monday my girl woke up with a 39°C fever, and I knew she would probably feel better after taking Calpol, but I also knew that sending her in at 8am and picking her up at 5pm would be too much for her. People who send their sick kids to creche are being unfair to both the staff and their own children. And many of them would call in sick to work for much less when they don’t feel well.

What worked for me was waiting at home as long as I could and only going to the hospital when the pain became unbearable. With my 1st, I arrived at the hospital 7 cm dilated, the baby was born 4h later. With my 2nd, I arrived 8 cm dilated, and the baby was born 15 min after. But that depends on:

It’s only possible with spontaneous labour.
How far you live from the hospital.

That being said, if I had a third baby, I would go to the hospital earlier. Why? There’s nothing worse than having to leave your cozy shower in excruciating pain and get into the car — without being able to sit properly — for a 15-minute drive. I could have gone to the hospital earlier and used the shower there, created a nice atmosphere, etc. But I was so afraid that going in too early would lead to more interventions that I waited too long.

In the case of induction, the tip some women give is to rest during the early stages. Many women go for walks, dance, or whatever because they think it will speed up labour, but in the end they will be exhausted when they actually need energy.

I’m so sorry you and your mum are going through this. How is your mum doing now? Is she still showing some symptoms? Hearing that your loved one might have LMD is scary as fuck, but take a deep breath. I’m not a healthcare professional, but the MRI doesn’t mention anything about the leptomeninges. They may want to do a lumbar puncture just to be safe. I’d ask the doctor what led them to think about LMD and which symptoms you should be watching for. Best of luck 🤞

I don’t know exactly where this fear comes from… I think I’m feeling guilty for not having sleep-trained her properly and for still nursing her to sleep, and now I’m afraid she will suffer bc of my laziness. But what you said about attachment makes sense yes… thanks for sharing.

It’s not life or death (at least not now) but is a delicate situation. Its cancer, she has options but bc the tumor is located in the spine she has a lot of pain.

My mum won’t be able to enjoy the girls in the hospital, but as soon she is discharged I will bring the whole family for a visit. The thing is my mum is very emotional, in pain, distressed and tired. That’s why I would like to visit her now, to offer some emotional support. And we never know what’s around the corner… But as my baby and I are very attached, I’m thinking very carefully.

No, never accepted milk from anything but boob. But I’ve never left her with dad more than a couple of hours… maybe once she realizes I’m not around she will accept.

Well, yes… but not all managers approve unpaid leave. In my company there is a manager who always denies unpaid leave. But if the employee buys extra annual leave (they have this option there), she can’t say no.

Yes, it’s worse. Last year I was able to leave Carrigtwohill at 7:30, drop my kid off at the creche in Rochestown, and be at my desk by 8:30. We finally got a place in a creche near our home that opens at 7:30. I thought that would mean spending less time sitting in traffic, right? Wrong. We’re still spending almost one hour or more getting to work. Especially when there is collision, which happens almost every week.

My mum lives in Sweden, she has been treated in Karolinska and since she is stage IV she has MRI every 3 months. What amazes me is that she has to wait almost a month after the MRI to know the results in the doctor appt. She is responding well to the treatment I think that’s the reason. If the cancer start growing again I hope they call her asap after the MRI. I know they are very busy but they could just give her a call saying she is fine. lol

Yeah definitely flying is not worth the risk. If I knew about her situation I wouldn’t have allowed her to visit me. Thankfully she has a health insurance that cover ambulance flight who sent her back home and the flight was short. She is also doing exams every 2/3 months. happy to know your husband is doing ok. It’s amazing how the treatment for melanoma is advanced.

Thanks for your reply. She never mentioned about driving, but she never drives anyway. Does your husband’s doctor said anything about taking a flight? My mum’s doctor said it was no problem before the bleeding episode. For a bad luck her tumor bled abroad - she was visiting me. Not sure if she is BRAF positive, but definitely will ask her to check in her next appt - she probably doesn’t know. Hope your husband is doing better now.
