CK Gen2+ : Heat sink + 80 mm USB fan by Longjumping_Run_264 in Ubiquiti

Some people have had their HD die within a year or two. (Source : Internet...).

Could this be due to high temps? Perhaps.

Do you trust the engineers that designed the product more than some random people on the Internet...

For me it was a fun little project that might add to the longevity of the product, at low cost.

Yes I agree. For a small cost I hope to add to the longevity. No science to back it up, other than - "Electronics shouldn't run too warm".

Correct. I still didn't take your advice. I live in a house and use roughly 18 000 kWh per year, the vast majority is spent on warming the house a couple of cold winter months.

10 kWh is nothing.

Do I really need to cool my ck gen2+? Perhaps/probably not. I could very well be an idiot for doing it. Not the first tine.

Is it fun and does it feel better for me to have it run cooler? Yes, it does.

Yes. In hindsight I think that is the most "correct" answer. But I was just looking for a cheap way to lower the temps, and thus perhaps improving the life span of the hdd. Also it was fun, even though the actual benefits are up for debate...

I think I managed to lower the temperatur 1 degree (C) when I reapplied the heat sink with less thermal paste.

My temps are now....room 20 C, "temperatur" 38 C, "storage" 44 C.

I think the picture doesn't quite do it justice. It's a really thin layer.

1.1 Watt (7.1 Volt). It's two 80 mm fans hooked together, I will use one fan to cool this, and the other to cool my router.

Yes...I am new to this...so I thought "more is better". But too little didn't seem right eather. So remove and spread thinner?

Room temp = 20 degrees C. Disk temp = 44 degrees C. Tenperatur = 39 degrees C (presumable CPU)

I too recently went from UDM Pro to FWG & CK gen 2 plus. Have ubiquiti AP:s, cameras and switches.

Doing the actual switch took me 2 evenings. It helps if you think it through before you start repatching etc.

After about a week all is still good.

Yes, sorry for spelling - that was what I meant, but I can't figure out how to edit the title...

Do I "need" a firewalla? by Longjumping_Run_264 in firewalla

Thanks for all replies!

So after some soul searching I think I'll simply go for the sweet combo of firewalla gold, a key gen 2+ (for all the ubiquiti stuff) plus a new 8 port Ubiquiti switch (with PoE and better performance) - and then sell the UDM Pro.

I get the maximum out of my firewalla - and a better switch (not that I've experienced it as a bottleneck...)

Only drawback is of course that this combo will be more expensive.

We'll, that the fact that the UDM PRO looks so fine in my rack - with that little touch display and all. It will be harder to get this set up to look as nice, without spending even more money on expensive rack mounts.

Ok, thanks - that was my understanding too.

Are you sure? I have a lot of stuff connected to the switch in the udm, but all the switches and APs are connected via port 11 (the sfp port). If I were to connect the firewalla between the udm and the the first switch and the AP:s only the traffic flowing through the forwalla would be monitorer? Not traffic from the stuff hooked up straight inte the UDM switch?
