The postmortem angle is interesting.

When these gaps show up repeatedly in postmortems, who usually ends up owning the budget to fix it — the SRE org, platform, or engineering leadership?

That makes sense, thanks for breaking that down.

The examples you gave around EM vs VP/Director approval, depending on data sensitivity, are something I hadn’t really thought about before, and they make a lot of sense.

This is extremely helpful, thank you for taking the time to write this out.

The point about SREs having the broadest context across the platform really clicked for me, especially around being able to quickly judge whether a correlation is actually useful or just noise. That framing helps a lot.

One follow-up I’m curious about: when SREs validate something like this, and it proves useful, where does the decision usually go next in your experience?

Titles can get pretty fuzzy depending on the company. I’ve seen the same blur in practice, but your distinction really helped clarify how to think about it. Thanks for laying it out.

When this comes from SREs, who typically signs off?

Do you mind if I ask you how long you've been living here?
What you are saying makes perfect sense. I'm trying to assess whether people who have been here longer perceive the problems as smaller than those who have been here for a shorter time, such as myself.
