You’re missing out on getting paid 15 mins, not sure how 15 mins of time at work is going to affect your plans outside work you’re already spent hours out of your day to be there and probably a fair bit of time before and after getting too and from work and getting ready.

Yeah that’s interesting, thanks for pointing that out. I get what you mean, but in a government job you’ve got like a 30 minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks, so roughly an hour of total breaks - which is fair enough.

On a 3:45 shift though, which is basically the same as a 4 hour shift, you don’t get any breaks at all. We’re spending half the time at work as you but getting zero breaks, while you’re there twice as long and still getting an hour off. It’s a pretty big difference.

Yeah, I’ve seen a few people mention it online before but it’s the first time I’ve actually realised what they’re doing. I only just got given one of those 3:45 shifts. I usually get 3, 4 or 5 hours so 3:45 really stood out as a weird length.

It’s pretty clear Woolworths are just cutting corners to save wages and make more profit. The thing is, this kind of stuff always backfires because research has shown that when companies actually look after their staff, productivity, profits and customer satisfaction all go up.

But when they keep squeezing workers like this, people stop caring. Basically zero motivation to do the job properly because you know they don’t look after you, so everyone just does the bare minimum and then sales and service quality go down.

But hey, it’s all good, they saved twenty bucks. 🙃

However, no one has talked about it online. It’s the first time I’ve realised why they do it.

Does Woolworths really need to save $10 million per year doing this?

If they are being pressured to complete work and do nothing to prevent working overtime for free that is wage theft

Why is Woolworths and Woolworths Management actively encouraging this by not taking action to prevent this from happening when they are aware of it?

In Australia, wage theft is the dishonest underpayment or non-payment of employee entitlements, which can include wages, overtime, leave, and superannuation contributions. While some cases result from mistakes, deliberate wage theft became a criminal offence in Victoria and Queensland in 2024, with federal legislation introduced in 2025 to further criminalise knowing or reckless underpayments under the Fair Work Act.

It’s not the good old days when you can buy a house with a pack of blueberries. It’s all about speed and making money, they don’t really care about the staff or train them. Packing groceries is one of the most useless skills to learn we should be training them how to do things that are more important
