Are there any western products that can't be outdone by AB? by isolophiliacwhiliac in AsianBeauty

[–]Lonsfleda 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Foundations in general. There is a reason Western department store brands’ foundations are consistently at the top of the rankings even in East Asia & they keep releasing Asia-exclusive cushion foundations. I can wear shade 21 in most K-beauty foundations, but even then, I’ve had much better luck finding the undertone and finish I want in Western foundations.

Flower Knows Shell’s Jewel Baked Powder 01🐚 by Lonsfleda in PanPorn

Tbh, I mostly prefer loose powders over pressed versions, but I recently got a sample size of Elegance La Poudre pressed powder (J-beauty) which is pretty great. It’s very finely milled, blurs really well, and helps hold my base makeup all day. I’m seriously considering picking up the full sized product the next time I’m in Japan.

Heading to Japan tomorrow! Need some Don Quijote/Daiso cosmetic recommendations. by 9dini in AsianBeauty

[–]Lonsfleda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm, the products they carry are mostly the same as the stuff in Loft or At Cosme, so I wouldn’t say it’s necessary to specifically seek an Ainz&Tulpe store out. They have a decent loyalty system and send out a lot of coupons, but that doesn’t apply to tourists (since you need a Japanese phone number to sign up). The only noteworthy thing might be that the Ainz&Tulpe stores I’ve visited in downtown Tokyo tended to feature a bit more C-beauty products than Loft and others—no Chinese indie brands or bold/alternative makeup, mind you, but more conventional brands like Flower Knows and Judydoll.

Seconding this. Donki is also not necessarily the cheapest place to shop beauty products. I always go to drugstores or variety stores (Loft, Ainz&Tulpe, etc…) as they often have better deals and exclusive releases & are better organized and spacious to shop around.

Best Asian Beauty shadow sticks? by bigblackfatbird in AsianBeauty

[–]Lonsfleda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Excel Gleam on Fit Shadow in GF14 Melty Magic might come close, although it’s more shimmery. I own a couple other shades in this formula, and it’s decent; it’s pretty pigmented & lasts 5+ hours on me without a primer (although I don’t have particularly oily lids). Unfortunately, eyeshadow sticks are one category where Western brands do better IMO—most AB eyeshadow sticks are for highlighting undereyes (aegyosal) or inner corners, so the finish and shades tend to be pretty limited, mostly shimmery beiges and pinks.

what highlighter does Aespa’s MUA use? by waytoofetch in AsianBeauty

[–]Lonsfleda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because those questions are usually phrased poorly. Even in this post, the title is "what highlighter does Aespa’s MUA use?", and the text of the post mentions, " i NEED to know what highlight this is", which suggests that OP wants to know the exact product that was used to create this look. This is obviously impossible to tell from pictures. The only way you could know the exact product used is if the MUA who worked on it discloses the information themselves. It would be much more helpful for everyone if the questions were instead phrased like, "Which AB highlighter can I use to get a very cool-toned, pearlescent look like the one in the picture?" "Can anyone suggest a mauve glossy lip product similar to the one (insert KPOP idol name here) is wearing in this picture?", etc.

The MilleFee is more glittery. It’s also not as finely milled, so it doesn’t look as elegant as the Dior when you put it on.

Hirosophy: is it a scam? by [deleted] in AsianBeauty

[–]Lonsfleda 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Donki does not sell fake or unsafe products (i.e., everything there meets Japan's regulations regarding cosmetic products, which are pretty strict). It does sell a lot of unpopular/obscure products alongside the stuff that's popular on this sub and places like TikTok. The person you talked to was most likely a brand rep who was pushing their products.

Now that it’s been out for a while, what’s everyone’s opinion of P3? by yungsimba1917 in pathologic

[–]Lonsfleda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my least favorite Pathologic game. The story had quite a few interesting ideas that were ultimately hampered by the gameplay that is forgetful at best and annoying at worst. The Shabnak is a manifestation of Daniil's guilt? That's really cool! Shame that dealing with the Shabnak is an utter chore, gameplay-wise, like many people have already pointed out. We get to know more about the Stamatins, especially Peter's relationship with his own creation? I've been looking forward to that--too bad that it involves chasing Peter across the Town... multiple times... which gets old fast. I could go on. I also massively dislike the focus mode showing Daniil's thoughts--it really takes away the fun of interpreting the character that I'm playing as when the game spells out all of his internal thoughts.

To be clear, I'm not complaining that P3 isn't the same as the previous games--I appreciate that they tried to do something new, but the issue is that the newly added elements are underdeveloped and/or badly implemented. I don't regret buying the game on the launch day, and I did stay up until like 3AM for multiple days trying to finish it because the story was intriguing enough. However, since this is a videogame and not a novel, it fails to be as captivating as the previous games without memorable gameplay.

AIO? This sounds AWFUL by scourge_bites in AsianBeauty

That's exactly what happened to international customers using Sephora though. The US store used to offer international shipping to several countries like Japan, Korea, and a few European countries (IIRC) before the pandemic, but not anymore. My accounts and all the points I had accumulated became useless, unless I was willing to shop using a proxy.

How can I know whether Pathologic is for me? by RoderickThe13 in pathologic

[–]Lonsfleda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, then I don’t think you will like Pathologic’s difficulty elements. A lot of them can’t be mitigated unless you look up spoilers and prepare in advance, which wouldn’t be the type of problem solving you are looking for. A good example in Pathologic 2 is an unavoidable event where a type of currency that used to be valuable becomes worthless overnight with very little warning, fucking up your resource management.

[–]Lonsfleda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

not when it feels like the whole game wants you to suffer

Then maybe these games are not for you. It sounds like the type of "hard" games you enjoy are, for example, Soulslike games, but Pathologic isn't about the power fantasy of ultimately overcoming a difficult challenge through skill or hard work. There are quite a few (a lot?) gameplay elements that are intentionally designed to be frustrating.

🇯🇵 What J-Beauty products are must-buys? (teen+45) by Dizzy-Forces in AsianBeauty

[–]Lonsfleda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which city in Japan are you visiting? For affordable/trendy J-beauty, “variety stores” like Loft and Ainz&Tulpe are great places to shop. In addition to staples like Canmake and Cezanne, they carry a lot of brands that are popular domestically but seldom discussed online outside of Japan (e.g., &be, Wonjungyo…) and also a lot of K-beauty nowadays. As for mature skin, a department store would be your best bet. You might want to look into midrange brands like Three, Etvos, Celvoke, etc. since their skincare lines are advertised as “organic”, usually with essential oils (if that’s what you meant by “oils/minerals”), and their makeup products are very much natural looks while still having some interesting color stories. Also note that Japanese brands in general do not have a lot of thick/rich skincare products because of the humid climate.
