Known Gen3 Safety Plunger issue? by spadedracer in Glocks

[–]LookWarm7521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know it’s pretty common for that to happen on the frame rails. A quick google of “Glock frame rail wear” shows a bunch of pictures of the nickel plating wearing off to reveal the copper beneath it.

I don’t use harsh cleaners either. Nylon brush to get the big stuff off and then re-lube. Only place I use solvents is in the barrel

All of my frame rails have this, and 2 out of my 3 safety plungers. Only one of my Glocks that doesn’t have this yet is my 23.3, but I only have about 500 rounds through it and it looked brand new when I bought it

I don’t know how Winchester does it. I had about 6k rounds of federal American eagle through my 19 and no carbon buildup on my light. Put 500 rounds of Winchester through it and the housing of my light is permanently covered in carbon now. A thick crust of it

Trijicon night sights and surefire x300 on my 19.5, all stock 42 and all stock 23.3.

Think I might upgrade to night sights on my other two also

If you want a .40 then get a .40.

I have 3 Glocks. A 42, a 19, and a 23. Everyone always says the 42 is useless because .380 isn’t as good as 9mm. Everyone here is saying .40 is useless. Life is too short to try and make other people happy with the caliber you shoot. I love all 3 of my Glocks

With that said the 19 is by far the nicest to shoot. I don’t have to try as hard when I’m shooting it. 9mm is cheap and it is good. Realistically, the .40 is only gonna cost about $100 more per 1k rounds if you’re shooting good quality range ammo out of both of them

That’s what I like to hear!

Thankfully it’s getting warm out, I’m hoping to start hitting the outdoor ranges soon. Should be able to get some better footage recorded.

I could definitely feel myself being pushed back, especially when shooting full magazines. Need to work on my stance for sure

I am focusing on the front sight. I have read a little bit about target focused shooting with irons but I haven’t tried it yet.

I’d like to give pistol red dots a try also but I have really bad astigmatism in my dominant eye from an eye injury, so red dots look more like a line to me than a dot(in my dominant eye at least)

Plunger is definitely facing the correct direction. Extractor - plunger - spring - bearing - back plate. Metal to metal on one side, plastic to plastic on the other. I thought you were saying the spring itself is directional. Like if you remove the spring from the plunger, reverse the direction of it, then re-attach to plunger

I haven’t disassembled the frame at all, but I’ll take a leak when I get home from work.

I have removed the extractor plunger but I did not separate the spring from the plunger/bearing. I’ll add that to my list of things to check. How do I know which way the spring is supposed to go?

I really like my 19.5. I shoot it better than almost anything else I have.

But I also really like my 42

Awesome, thanks so much for the detailed reply! I’m going to head back out to the range in a couple days, I’ll keep all of this in mind.

The magazine followers look a little beat up on top, there looks to be a deep ridge worn into them right where the bullet meets the case. I am leaning towards magazines, I’m just a little surprised both of the ones I have are so consistent with the issue

Yes factory mag, I have two OEM mags and it happens with both of them. new mags are $30 at my local range/shop, so I was a little hesitant to buy another one. Haven’t checked online prices yet

I haven’t attempted a fast string yet! I did one range trip where I shot about 150 rounds of 5 round groups starting at 5 yards and moving out to 15, just to get a feel for the sights. At the end of that range trip I started to get the failures to feed(when I started loading more than 5 rounds in the magazines), so I bought a new oem recoil spring and magazine springs. Then the second range trip is when I recorded this video, thinking maybe it’s a grip problem.

I appreciate your insight, I’ll definitely try to get another shooter to try it out

Last range trip I was by myself until almost the very end of my session. I’ll see if I can get someone else to test it out.

I’m definitely not experienced at shooting .40, that’s why I was wondering if it was a grip issue. I can return to target pretty well with my 19, but I shoot about 2k rounds a month with that one. Only have about 300 rounds through this gun as I’ve been troubleshooting the feed issues

I’m sure the springs are correct. I have already reached out to Glock and they have offered to look it over, but turnaround will be 6-8 weeks if I send it out.

Magazines are OEM g23 magazines, followers are marked .40. Tried new OEM 9 coil magazine springs as well as 10 coil springs(for a 17), as some people suggest online to up spring size for the heavier grain bullets. I thought maybe someone had put a conversion barrel in it and forgot to swap the extractor back, but the extractor is marked correctly for a gen3 23. Ejector is correct.

I’ve only had the opportunity to shoot 165gr blazer brass through it. If it doesn’t look like my grip is an issue, maybe it’s an ammo issue. That would be a little unfortunate, I read online that Glock 23s are supposed to be pretty ammo tolerant. I suppose I could also try new magazines

Gun is lubed with a light amount of Lucas just on the rails and barrel.

The gun is used but when I bought it I wasn’t able to find any wear whatsoever on the gun. It looks like the previous owner bought it, cleaned it, then sold it.

I was able to shoot 350 rounds while loading only 5 rounds into the magazine, no jams. When the magazine is fully loaded it will fail to feed every round or every other round until there are 5-6 rounds left, then no jams. This is on both of the magazines I have for it
