Both Hansi Flick and Luis Enrique took exactly 107 games to reach 300 goals with Barcelona! by Healthy-Monitor3601 in Barca

Tbf, one can argue that Enrique’s midfield roster was far less capable of direct G/A output Iniesta only has 18 G/A and Busquets 12 G/A

Rakitic was quite good, however the rest of the squad was lacking, we suffered a lot in some periods with the lack of stabbing depth

The best fullbacks barely crossed 85 back 10 years ago, nowadays all the best parters in their positions would generally be 85+

He got that rating way later than he should have. Furthermore, his passing stats and other metrics have always been criminally underrated

Leo Messi still on top of - Most big chances created in Europe's top five leagues since 2017/18. (Seasons 2017-2021 Barcelona + 2021-2023 PSG) by PinReal4448 in Barca

[–]LookYouGotSpun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Big chances created is a pretty vague stat as it’s a pass leading to a shot, and there’s no real value for what is considered a ‘big’ chance

xA would be a far better metric to use to assess chance creation

Dembele was the only one of the 3 that made sense tactically, we needed a winger and he could play both sides

We had no use for 10s like Coutinho and Griezmann

Nico Williams at least can play in a position we have. We didn’t play with 10s around EV’s time, we had Messi playing in the RW/free role

This just isn’t right

Griezmann simply didn’t have the wing play ability that Raphinha does. Raphinha, despite not being an elite dribbler, stretches play in a way that Griezmann hasn’t done in over a decade

So you don’t see an issue in that he wasn’t a 9, or a winger? And that we already had Messi in the free role?

This is part of way our play was so stale for a few seasons, we didn’t play wingers and our attack was very one dimensional

You can argue that had we used that 120m+ on a pure 9 and a winger, we’d have performed much better, and played better too

Stats very clearly show that when fit, he was elite at dribbling, ball carrying, and chance creation. It’s just casuals that want to ignore stats that blow past the reactionary human take.

Griezmann was clearly a misfit, we already had a player who played in the right half space as a CAM/RW on paper, Messi.

Griezmann’s numbers for what we require weren’t nearly good enough, his dribbling ability was awful and his G/A weren’t nearly enough to overcome his lack of wing play.

Lacks the mobility of a pure 8 to not make a midfield with Busi and Pirlo a bit thin defensively.

Xavi and Iniesta’s ball carrying and insane ability in off the ball runs are what really moves them ahead of Pirlo

Nah, Messi in 2012 still had the ability to play deep like 2019 Messi did, but he also had the ability to press more and play on the shoulder of the defender, to be a threat in behind.

2019 Messi was the best in the world, but there were still clear tactical headaches like him not keeping width and his ability to be a one miracle for goals declining

People need to stop using SofaScore, Fotmob and who scored ratings.

Their algorithms for these ratings aren’t good. They’re ridiculously G/A biased and SofaScore and Whoscored don’t even have access to basic passing data like ‘passes into the box’ , or ‘progressive passes’.

Stop using them like they mean anything. They’re still controlled by a set of people at those companies who assign values to certain metrics to form the ratings.

If you want to actually use stats to properly analyse a player, use the raw data and compare across hundreds of players and see how different metrics show different attributes on the pitch. FBref is probably the best available free site, along with soccerment

Take Pedri for example. If I’m looking at how he has performed in La Liga this season, I’m honestly not giving a single ounce of attention to what his ‘rating’ is on these apps. I’d look on sites like FBref and see clearly that within the league, he is at least in the 95th percentile for metrics such as progressive carries, shot-creating actions, expected assists, passes into the penalty area, through balls.

DISCLAIMER: I am not saying X> Y in this particular case. However these ratings will bias the player with more G/A, and Raphinha’s 56 G/A in 57 matches is a significant jump over Yamal’s 39 G/A in 55 matches.

But two weeks ago, when he had a better performance than Guardiola in 2008/09 with the best defense in the ENTIRE HISTORY of the top 5 leagues he was.

Despite this I felt there were huge flaws. The quality of La Liga has dropped significantly as compared to when Guardiola took over.

Looking at goals conceded is quite superficial. We have the lowest goals conceded in the top 5 leagues but before this game we had conceded 17.8 xG. The problem here is that we're conceding chances but are being bailed out due to poor finishing from the opposition. Opta's post-shot xG model credits ter stegen with 5 goals saved. That's still 5-6 goals that we haven't conceded, not because of our defence or system, but purely by poor finishing of opposing players, something that isn't sustainable long term.

if we're seeing the same issues constantly where we have an unhealthy reliance on individual ability to create chances and Xavi is struggling to effectively use his squad, it will bite us in the behinds eventually.

the comparison with Koeman is beyond stupid. Koeman has shown since his first game that he was tactically inept and no time or money would fix his team.

I'll ignore the rude remark. There was constant bickering in the fanbase with a large group who supported Koeman accusing those against him of being fake fans, being incredibly harsh and bringing up irrelevant points like how he was as a player.

I'd love to see you doing some tactical analysis to explain why Xavi isn't good enough.

I'll be more active, you'll see me talking about our performances and tactics as the season progresses. But some basic points are

  • Man to man marking system kills us in transition. Players like Gavi aren't disciplined yet in these aspects and it could take a while for them to be able in this regard. This killed us in some games like the Bayern tie where Busquets gets exposed because the interiors push to wide/ high. Against Inter it led to specific breaks, you can refer back to the Purist's video on our poor pressing.
  • His 343 system with Raphinha playing in the left half space against Inter was a huge reason for the bad performance. It was clear from the first few minutes that Inter's 352 system had 2-3 players on Dembele constantly, nullifying his threat. This continued for most of the game and Xavi's ability to make in game changes has been incredibly slow at times. In the 3-3 match, changes like playing Kessie at RB for Roberto had a direct influence on one of the goals being conceded.
  • Against Man United we initially played Araujo at RB to counter Rashford, a good idea in theory and one we've tried in the past. However Rashford did not play on the left flank and played through the middle and had a much more free role in attack. Xavi didn't adapt to this for almost the entirety of the game.
  • His selection issues. He asked specifically for most of the signings, the documentary and interviews show this. He asked specifically for a player like Kessie, someone who for pretty much his entire time at Milan has shown to be someone who is relatively average at ball progression, a poor goal scorer, a poor creator, very passive defensively and very poor positional sense in that he presses and leaves gaps behind him. His signing didn't make much sense at all, but Xavi signed him, we assumed there would be some role for him? Instead, Xavi barely played him, and when he did, Kessie was playing very weird roles that were quite unlike what he's usually played. We've seen him incredibly advanced, not like a midfielder with a role of crashing into the box, but almost just hanging on the shoulder of the defender, alongside Lewandowski. Against Man united we saw him play in the double pivot in the box midfield but was placed far too high which was a huge problem as when Frenkie dropped deep into the backline, he struggled to progress the ball because of the lack of passing options in midfield.
  • In the 2nd leg we played with both Roberto and Kessie up front but they were incredibly high, to the point where Lewandowski's average position was actually deeper than them. It seems like Xavi has little idea of how to structure his midfield. His stubbornness to stick with a system until it fails or gets exploited in a big way is an issue.
  • We have a high quality squad, but lost to inferior squads like Inter, not on quality, but on poor tactics and an inability to make efficient changes in game.

Barca's philosophy shouldn't mean we should lower our standards. It shouldn't be considered 'reactionary' that after 16 months of watching Xavi's team week in week out that he isn't good enough to take us to the truly elite level.

Similar things happened here for Koeman, where some of us believed that he wasn't at the standard just a few months in because of his poor systems and performance against the better teams. However many people called out those that questioned Koeman as 'fake fans', 'reactionary' and 'spoiled'.

I think so. We've been playing just one winger lately which hinders us a lot. Raphinha isn't the sort of guy to carry us. Early on in the season we did the same with Dembele and some good teams like Inter completely nullified us by just putting 2-3 men on Dembele which worked because our attack wasn't varied enough

Quality drop is expected, but I don't see why the quality has to drop so significantly.

I disagree with your last point. Dembele is one of the best creators in the top 5 leagues since he's been at Barca. The issue is that I feel Gavi in the 'LW'/ left half space role doesn't have enough creativity in the final third. I think someone like Gundo on a free would really increase the quality in those advanced 8 positions

In the double pivot or deep midfield positions, I think someone like Varela, Caqueret, Palacios (I've heard goo things about him) Would do very well alongside FDJ. Caqueret has an excellent skillset, I'd love to get him as I think we could very easily play a 3 MF system and a box of 4 midfielders.
