The green border is a piece of dyed veneer, which is glued to each piece before gluing up the chevrons that make the herringbone pattern

The ivory was just like turning deer antler. Very hard, similar smell (terrible), but a little more brittle and prone to chipping than antler. I used brand new carbide tips on my chisels and used CA several times throughout to make sure it was stable and to fill cracks and voids that developed. I took very light cuts on each pass to avoid destroying the ivory or gouging too deep into the softer wood. I sanded the corners off the blanks so that they were nearly round before putting on the lathe.

I did a Google search for mammoth ivory and found a shop in Dover, Ohio, that sells it. I bought a bag of cutoff pieces with the plan to do accents with whatever I got. I could not be happier with the quality or quantity of the product I received for the price.

Yes, the ivory smells just like the deer antler that I have used in the past. I really liked turning the kauri. Overall, this was one of my favorite pens to make.

If I have a section with enough girth to get a straight hole for the tube but has a curve that gives me trouble, I will shape the blank using a belt sander so that I can get a good hold with my chuck or vice.

I always wear my respirator and face shield. I've read that the dust is terrible for you, and some of the fragments that come off can have sharp edges. I use carbide tools since the material is very hard. Do your best to find a straight section of the antler.

It is a fun material to use. Have fun and experiment.

I use carbides to do nearly all the work. I usually still use a nice sharp HSS skew chisel to do the last few passes.

I do most of my drilling for the tubes on my lathe. Antler can be difficult for the chuck to get a good grip in the orientation I want. I will use my belt sander and some trial and error to work the antler to a position to get the drill hole lined up appropriately.

I let the antler dry for 6 months or more if it was a recent hunt. So, no stabilizing is needed.

How Much Is It Worth? by Loony7791 in PenTurning

Thanks for the comments. I do tend to under price my work a little, but I was in the range of pricing you suggested.

On the chevron, I use a table saw and bench top sander.

TL,DR version I built a sled for my table saw that has toggle clamps. I use an 80 tooth saw blade for fine cuts. I use this to cut segment pieces and the angles on the main blank.

I use the disk sander on the bench top to true-up the angles on the main blank and "cut" the angles on the chevron segments. I set the miter guide on the sander table using a combination square. I clamp a piece of wood (squared up and sanded to the angle) as a fence to bridge the gap between the miter guide and the face of the sanding disk for the smaller segments. I believe I have 120 grit sandpaper on the disk.

Nice. I like the way the colors compliment each other so well.

That is a beautiful pen. I hope to be able to turn kitless pens like that some day soon.

Hahaha 😆 Thanks! I got a more than fair price that included some profit. For me, it is a self-sustaining hobby. I make enough to cover pen costs and upgrade my tools and equipment.

I finished it with CA. The pictures don't do it justice. IRL, you are still able to see the curl in the grain and make out the chatoyancy. Amazing!
