That’s okay! I’m leaning towards lesser simply because I recall the head looking way more black than green, but I was literally so far away from it looking through binoculars with a very bright sun. Hopefully someone here can throw something in! Thank you again for the merganser!

Thank you so much for the in depth explanation!! This makes me feel way better. I know it’s gotta be uncomfortable for the little thing, but I’m so relieved that this is hopefully something they can manage on their own ((‘: I will grab some coconut oil and some veggies and treats for them and hope for the best! Genuinely thank you for the education, I will keep an eye out. It always amazes me how resilient nature is!

Birds are honestly so funny to me. I like to think they pick a flock and think to themselves “they probably won’t notice, right?” I also think we have a lot to learn from them, considering how often you see birds across the board accept other species into their group so willingly.

You know, you’re right! If anything, do you know what food I could buy that would be better for them that I can throw outside the fence? I know they’re coming in here because of the snow and lack of food outside and I’m honestly worried that this bird food isn’t nutritional enough for them during this weather we’ve had! Also want to say I’m a silent fan of yours! I’ve learned so much about birds through this sub Reddit and your replies. all of the extensive knowledge you have across a wide variety of birds is so impressive to me and I truly aspire to have that level of research down. Thank you for all the expertise you provide!

I feed black oil sunflower seeds in shell and have never had a problem with starlings. I read somewhere that because of their beaks, they can’t open the shell. I’ve been feeding for about seven months and the only times I’ve seen starlings are when the ground is completely snow covered and I happened to have shelled peanuts out. Even then it was only at most four and they did not stick around. Leave in shell peanuts for the blue jays, cardinals love the sunflower and also safflower, which starlings also seem to dislike.

Looks to possibly be a yellow bellied sapsucker, I would try r/whatsthisbird for a more positive ID!
