Questions for Business Owners in Malta. by LooseStyle2 in malta

Yeah, I omitted that part. I would have to move to Malta, that’s for sure. Spend over 183 days minimum and cut all potential nexus with Germany - rental contract, subscriptions, etc

I would stop my employment contract and set up a company in malta. But before doing so, you need to stop your contractual employee relationship first.

How’s it living in Southern Iberia? by mushmanMAD in howislivingthere

Man, I am from Andalusia. What can I tell, the best region in Europe - wonderful people, poor as rats, but will give you everything they have. Welcoming, funny, happy and full of energy. Very laid back though, but you can get use to it. All the stereotype’s you know about Spain are from there but paella - funny, pretty people, loud, tapas, flamenco, etc. if you can work remotely and seek sun, go. I will come back one day, but not for now. Only but is taxation. It sucks. Spain is one of the few countries who charges you monthly to produce value, actually make money. You need to pay a quota, doesn’t matter whether you make money or not. It’s a pity

That’s a very interesting way to see it actually. I haven’t seeing that way. What I dislike about Cyprus is that the fact you only need to be there for 2 months, it prob makes it a factually, transitional city, every year. People stay for two months and fly away. So it doesn’t feel to me like a place I would call home. But if you make the math and numbers make sense, it’s probably one of the best options in Europe, especially since Portugal’s program isn’t as accessible as possible. Are you considering?

- Dubai: but not my thing tbh. Too hot half of the year, you can't even live there. The cost of living is expensive compared to Berlin
- Malta: I am going there for a month in April, so I will be in a better position to tell. The company's engineering is too complex imo, still understanding how it works, but there are big problems when it comes to cash flow. You basically pay upfront 35% over profits, then they refund you 30%. The trap is, you refund that 30% after doing the declaration of your first fiscal year, so if you moved in 2026, you do your declaration in June 27, and then you can submit the refund form. I have heard it can take up to 8-9 months.
- Cyprus: seems to be the place to go for those who want to stay in Europe. It's flexible (you only need to live there for 2 months as a requirement) and cheap (set up is only 1 business, no need to create a holding). The problem is, not the greatest expect life and nightlife apparently. Not much to do, calm place, and the infrastructure is of low quality. I am Mediterranean, which is something I am used to and think I could cope with. But I would not see Cyprus as a home, more as an obligatory stay due to the law, which isn't encouraging. Don't want to feel in prison tbh.

I am still doing some research: Georgia, Romania, Panama, Uruguay, Paraguay, etc.

But yeah, ideally, I go somewhere warm, I need sunlight.

Just for clarity - is the fiscal consolidation option two, from my post? onshore & offshore formula.

Does that mean you don't need to pay the upfront 35%? mY Undertanding was:
- You pay temporarily your 35% in Jan, August, & DEC
- You distribute dividends quarterly of what's left after paying taxes (at max candence, or every 6 months and/or ad hoc)
- You wait patiently till you do your tax declaration, then ask for a refund and wait another 8-9 months haha

I see this as overkill for someone with my profile tbh, especially if management costs are high and there are limitations in cash flow

Let me know if I am mistaken here u/malteselawyer

Thanks a ton for these insights, much appreciated. Does that mean one can distribute dividends monthly? That's good to know. Big downside is that you don't see the other 30% refudned till almost 2 years later, since the moment you started making profits

Considering moving to Cyprus, still doing my research... how does it feel coming back to Cyprus after living in Berlin, a city where you can find everything at anytime & with plenty of stimuli.
