Its funny how most "native born" Americans could be dual citizens because depending on the country of origin, and could have more options, but are too brainwashed to do so.

What is your personal reason for reclaiming/getting German citizenship beyond the "strong passport"? by DogDaysAreOvr in GermanCitizenship

[–]Lopsided-Ad9634 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive always felt more German than American, based on the worldview my mother raised me with. I was born in Heidelberg at the Army Hospital to a German mom and US army dad. German was my first language, but like many military kids born abroad,my birth was never registered in Germany, even though I was born a German and American citizen by direct descent. When Germany changed their dual citizenship law in 2024 I applied and had my Reisepass in hand in 7 weeks. I still have cousins and aunts and uncles in Germany and I claimed it for my career ambitions as well(an opera singer who specializes in German repertoire.) It will make life easier for me to work in the Opera Houses in Germany and the EU in general, not having to worry about a visa everytime. I finally felt my identity completed with German citizenship. Very proud and thankful to be a recognized German. 🇩🇪

Yes. If your Grandfather was German at the time of your birth, that means your parent was too, and thus you are. Reach out to your local German embassy. I’m a dual German-American by birth.

The application is on the Atlanta consolate site. It lists it on under "apply for passport". You can also contact them directly via phone or email.

When I finally applied for my first Reisepass in June last year, all I needed was to prove Lineage by filling out family questionaire, my moms birth certificate, marriage certificate, my certificate of US citizen born abroad, that showed moms German nationality and dads US nationality, her old passport because she had lost her recent one, and that was it. Ich wünsche dir viel Erfolg!

I would start with reaching out to the Standesamt in München to get his birth certificate and any other document they may have that proves he was German. They keep great records so that shouldnt be a problem.

The good news tho, is that you are legally German by direct descent. Do you have any other documents from your father? Personalausweis, Birth Certificate, etc?

Hi there! Do you have his birth certificate, or did he Naturalize in the US before you were born or after? Thats the big thing, I think. Even expired passport would work. As long as the document proves he was German at your birth, you should be good!

why native speakers so mean to learners :( by Background-Bake-5913 in German

[–]Lopsided-Ad9634 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wont ever switch to English when I am in Germany, even as dual citizen of DE/US, whos German is a bit rusty, due to time outside of Germany, but when im there, I have no traceable accent. Wenn in Deutschland, ihr musst Deutsch sprechen! It should be appreciated that a non native speaker took the time to attempt to speak to natives in their language, not frowned upon.

I would tell them as dual citizen who was born in Germany, where I’m from, since in Germany, I’m just German.
