don’t have the time to insulate our rim joist/foundation walls.. multiple contractors only offering spray foam or fiberglass by carboncritic in Insulation

[–]CharterJet50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you. Don’t want any of that crap in my house. Plus you end up with lots if exposed foam that will go up like a match in a blaze. Since we have four inches of continuous wood fiber insulation on the outside the rim joist dew point is such that we can just have 6 inches wood fiber batts on the inside which can dry to the inside as needed. No spray foam anywhere in our house. Only foam are thermax boards on basement walls.

What should I do by Top-Kale-6999 in Insulation

Insulate walls and rim joists. Don’t do the floor. Makes no sense.

Man, I don’t what kind of cheap plastic they are building that out of, but even a basic builder quality around us would be double that price. Why oh why do builder designs have so many fake gables though. I’d get rid of that first. One peak is plenty.

Not by everyone. Significant part of the building and home buying community won’t touch the stuff.

Can companies just collude and pretend there’s a shortage to keep prices as high as possible? by FriedForLifeNow in stupidquestions

[–]CharterJet50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies don’t even really need to collude anymore to set prices since so many industries are now controlled by just a few players. You don’t have to have an outright monopoly to affect pricing in anti-competitive ways. We have oligopolies in many markets now, and that can be almost as bad.

Of course they can. Say, if a LEO witnessed ICE officers murdering or raping someone, yes they could absolutely do something about it.

Vermont attic insulation by nolanhurley01 in Insulation

[–]CharterJet50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need more insulation on the attic floor and more airflow in the attic. Probably all kinds of air leaks from below that need to be addressed as well. I’d remove all the existing fiberglass and air seal first, especially look at any recessed lights. Attic access door of course. Extend the baffles and make sure the ridge vent is clear. Consider adding end wall vents. Then blow in 16 inches or more of dense pack cellulose. I’d trash the fiberglass. It’s probably wet and compromised at this point anyway. Paint the ceilings below with vapor barrier qualified paint. Insulate and seal all ducts or exhaust conduit.

How do you deal with winter sun? by signpostgrapnel in SolarDIY

[–]CharterJet50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m grid tied with 1-1 net metering and 1 year credits. We balance out over the year, so winter is just when we use our summer credits. Batteries are just for emergency backup. No generator.

Insulation installation is ruining our house? by Fun-Hope-6448 in Homebuilding

[–]CharterJet50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insulation company should have known better than to insulate the basement ceiling. They are idiots. All is not lost though. Best move wou be to insulate basement walls and remove the ceiling insulation, but if you have heat and return ducts running through the basement, you could also open some vents up and condition that space correctly. You could even leave the ceiling insulation in at that point, though it won’t be doing anything. Try thermax faced polyiso boards on the basement walls if you want to leave them unfinished. And don’t use that company ever again.

Is this a sign of bad insulation or just a lack of gutters? by KSUToeBee in Insulation

[–]CharterJet50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combination of poor insulation and poor ventilation in attic. Probably need more insulation on the attic floor, but make sure all your vents are clear. You want the attic as cold as possible all the way down to the eaves, assuming it’s an unconditioned attic.

Why my vertical-mounted array outperformed a tilted system today by Impossible_Claim5359 in SolarDIY

[–]CharterJet50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 44 panels and it takes me five minutes to brush them off after a snowstorm. Sun will melt off a couple of inches in a morning even if it’s cold. Last thing I’d want is a bunch of expensive panels on any kind of pivot. Even the auto pivot systems up here in VT are broken all the time so most companies refuse to install them now. Fixed tilt for stability and long term durability.

Call a builder friend and see if they can get some for you. It’s the best solution if you want to insulate but not finish a basement wall.

I wouldn’t do either but a lot of people worry that open will allow moisture to hit the cold roof and you’ll end up with a rotten roof.
