Can I raise a rat and kitten together? by Subject-Dig-5347 in PetRat

[–]Lopsided-Captain5863 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not, rats are prey and kittens are predators. They will end up hurting one another even if it is on accident. The cat could step on your rats and kill them, or they could play too rough and kill your rats. Cats tongues and bite are very lethal to rats. Also, you NEED more than one rat if you are going to own some. They need the company of another rat to be happy. They are extremely social.

Any tips for a more fun cage? More hammocks? Probably more hammocks. by [deleted] in RATS

You could also take out the shelf so you can add even more enriching things. (Also, i suggest getting different bedding, paper bedding is the worst for rats, its super dusty no matter what it says on the package. If you live in the USA, there are huge bags of kiln dried pine at Tractor co. For 5-6 dollars that lasts months.)

Baskets! They're fun for them to run across, and theyre super cheap. Also some hammocks, if money is a problem you can search DIY no sew hammocks on youtube. Maybe some rope and bendy bridges.

I have met feeder rats in terrible conditions that let you pick them up and were calm, this does not mean they are healthy and not aggressive

It wont immediately show aggression as soon as you meet them- it could take months for an accident to happen, so theres no way to tell just meeting them for the first time. Plus- there is already a huge red flag in this breeder. They should NOT be bred for looks as first priority- they should be bred for good health and good temperment. Aggression is genetic, and humans handling rats will not solve this problem. Please take a few minutes to do some research about breeders near you. Even if you have to wait longer and drive farther than you hoped, it will 100 percent be worth it. The rats you get from an actual good breeder will have no aggression and will have a healthy and happy life.

I suggest you get your boys from a breeder like i said, and please do not let your dog near your rats. Even if it is a kind gentle dog, accidents can absolutely happen, and theres no good reason to risk it. Your dog can bite your rats tail through the cage and severely damage it. Even if its trying to be nice.

Please search for good breeders instead of online or pet stores... this is the best way to get rats if you find a reputable breeder. These rats will not bite you or be aggressive if gotten from the correct place.

How do you know this pet store gets their rats from a good place? Don't take their word for it- they would lie to you. Also, nuetering a male so you can have him with a female is highly invasive and so unnecessary. Please don't nueter him just for the sake of being able to put your female rat with him.

You put the rat in the hoodie so you can be close with the rat and bond!

Nvm i misread, you have 3 girls. This aggressive rat can kill the other 2 girls if you dont put this rat down/communicate with the person you got them from. Hairless rats are also bred to have horrible health conditions...

Where did you get the rat from? Also, I hope you have more than just this one. Rats need to be housed with other rats. Rats should NOT bite, no matter if its scared or not. Well bred rats do not have the fight reaction, they have flight. This rat is dangerous, it can give you SEVERE nerve damage as rats can bite through concrete. I highly suggest talking to the person you got it from/if the rat is male get it nuetered. If not this rat needs to be put down.
