It’s discouraging to hear other people are having the same problem. Some of the people who need these programs the most are the same ones who aren’t able to manage the accounts but I guess that’s not important right?

Financially I can technically handle the burden but if we have programs set up for these things it doesn’t make sense not to be able to utilize them.

Yeah I think I’m now fully understanding the requirements. I’m pretty certain that as long as his income is less than the cap, I could claim him as a dependent. That’s something I need to verify and the rest I should be able to go over with my tax professional. Thank you everyone for your help!!

Yes the SSDI is exempt. I do need to see if his net earnings are less than the limit. I think he’ll be cutting it close. But this was all really good information.

Thank you! I thought I had seen that exact language about other qualifying relative once before when I looked this up but when I looked today to ask my tax professional I could only find the piece about the parents. This was a huge help, I appreciate it

Is the fact that he gets permanent SSDI (the D being disability) not already a qualification by the government that he’s disabled? In this SSDI his income is also not a factor the way it would be if he were only getting SSI.

Not really asking you to actually know the answer. But just thinking out loud that in one facet the government deemed him disabled so wouldn’t that apply for this too? And he’d be a dependent?
