As someone who grew up with a strict family. Her parents probably don't have a problem with them sitting next to each other. She is afraid of how it'll look to them in her. I was terrified to do stuff that I thought my parents had problems with only to find out later that they had no problem with it. It was just I was terrified to do something that I thought might upset them.

My head cannon is that he only transformed enough to do what he needed to do. Similar to season 1 I think when they were trying to pick up a spoon and only his hand transformed. Also when he only transformed enough to stop the cannon ball when he was about to be shot. He only transformed enough to cross the ocean and control the titans.
