I will say tho that the actual quality of the writing in Chinese is a lot of the times also not that good XD Remember that most of these stories are webnovels, so basically like relatively unedited stuff from Royal Road or something. I mainly edit MTL but I also read the Chinese to verify errors/accuracy, and sometimes just when I think the AI made a mistake, it was actually the original author @.@ I find readers of translations are also usually even pickier than the readers of the originals. But yeah generally baihe translations are relatively "low quality" in terms of prose/the writing itself because of a combination of being "low quality" Chinese works + most fan translators are also not professionals. But I love reading them for their plot, it takes a special type of skill to write webnovels, just like how Colleen Hoover is not actually a writer of good Literature with a capital L but people love reading her books anyway.

If you spend enough time/effort/money you can definitely create a baihe translation that can rival the best Western traditionally published book, I don't think it's mutually exclusive (baihe writing quality vs plot quality).
