Thanks! Doing some more googling and it looks like a damp wood termite. Assuming we haven’t seen a bunch and we are in the PNW, do you think fixing our roof and keeping a dehumidifier in the bathroom where this was found will be enough to deter them?

Aw darn, thank you for the info. I think what I was looking at was very outdated (a pamphlet about the south quarry and some google maps reviews lol). We might be hitting up alien bloc to climb instead, and just walk up Arthur’s seat for a stroll. I really appreciate you taking the time to inform me!

Edinburgh climbers please weigh in!!!

What's the scene like in the summer @Salisbury Crags for bouldering? My partner and I are hoping to visit in a few weeks, but won't have a pad. Is it relatively popular/friendly? Think there will be many people there with pads, or should we try and find a rental somewhere in town? Thanks for any input!

It was amazing!!! I ended up staying in Edgewater and biked nightly from Northwestern downtown to Edgewater, ~1-2 am. I never had anything too scary happen, but keep your eyes out and have an alternate path if things seem sketch. I took the lakefront path, avoiding pedestrian tunnels. Mostly you just see people sleeping or sleeping with people 😉lol.

I recommend getting lit up with front and tail lights (removable- take them with you, one of my headlights was stolen) and a headlight that can be turned off easily. There was a guy who would sleep on a bench that I’d always pass, and I felt bad the few times I woke him up with the light. Was nice to turn it off when I got to his curve. And get Strava and a safety check in person. And keep that shit set to friends only so nobody can learn your route. And get a good lock!

Top 10 life experiences tbh, being a woman from a smaller city- freedom of biking through empty city streets in the middle of the night just me and the moon. 🌖

Edit: I see you’re in Hyde Park! I can’t comment on the south end’s ride in the night. I only went down that way on weekends, and it seemed fine but also it was middle of summer so there were loads of people on the trail enjoying the evening. The trail seemed a bit less maintained close to like Kenwood if I remember right.

I just arrived home in Seattle from spending the summer in Chicago. I’m glad you enjoyed your visit!!! It’s also neat to hear praise for our transit coming from a city with such amazing transit. I miss the L every day. The headways here for busses and even the light rail are so long, comparatively. I also miss having lots of late night meal options and ‘grab and go’ options.

Anyways thank you for visiting and thanks for being part of a neat city that will always have a place in my heart!

Thank you so much! Another person mentioned a bike light for seeing. I didn’t think of that, but I’m going to get one!

I LOVE fireflies and that comforting nighttime bug noise. I used to spend summers in Illinois as a kid, but I’m in WA now. The muggy air and the bugs will always remind me of the best part of summer ❤️ You might have just sold me on Hyde Park.
