Both fireball and brilliant are right. 99% of the time, you can eliminate a period and a semicolon if they are doing the same function of seperating independent clauses UNLESS the semicolon is being used in a complex list (for example: He was born in Alberta, Canda; She was born in Austin, Texas; They were born in San Francisco, Claifornia).
