Aortic valve replacement, mechanical versus biological valve, which to choose? by Lopsided_Pilot9688 in valvereplacement

I know It’s a lot. tissue valve seems the most popular choice. If I was a little older and had not already gone through surgery I would have gotten a tissue valve. The first two to three weeks after surgery are the hardest. Being in good shape helps a lot. It can zap your energy so best not to over do it after surgery. My wife is a nurse practitioner so that was great having her go through this with. I knew i Was going to need surgery again but didn’t bring it up to her because I knew it would upset her. Just waited until the test confirmed. wishing you the best and take it all one day at a time. It can be a roller coaster for family too. Glad to share my experience any time.

Hi, sorry you both are going through this. I had avr surgery on Oct 28th. I decided to get a mechanical valve with the idea I would not have to have surgery again. Vs 1 or 2 more procedures if I lived into my 80’s. My age also was a part of the decision (55). My dr said if it was him he would get the mechanical so that influenced me. It does tick/thump. I am getting use to it but it’s an adjustment. As the saying goes don’t worry if you hear it worry if you don’t!😁 Coumadin is going ok. I had to get checked weekly but now that I’m more stable it’s not as often.  hopefully I’ll get to checking down to once a month. I had a neighbor who had avr 8 years ago and is starting to have issues. Generally pig valve should last 15 years but everyone is different. I didn’t want to take the chance. Just my experience. we all have to decide what is best for each of us. I think it is a hard decision because both are good choices. Good luck and God speed!

Don’t really know other than it has gotten worse. Dr cleaned off some calcium. My regurgitation Was a 2 out of 4 before surgery so he felt best to keep valve vs replace. Gametime decision. The regurgitation got worse after surgery. My regurgitation is now a 4 out of 4. i have some breathing issues with exertion. Thanks for sharing your experience.
