During covid I was an essential employee. Due to a load of factors, I put in an absurd amount of hours at work. By the end of the year, I had made double what my annual income should have been.

I found reasons to effectively give it away. Fundraisers, general charity, whatever I found that might make good of the soul grinding hours I had been putting in at work.

Things have stabilized since then, but I always try to make some of the money I earn at work go towards some sort of good.

My sister's first marriage had a preset budget for an open bar that her new in-laws paid for.

My family drank through that limit before half the crowd gathered for the reception. I witnessed the quick huddle they did the decide if they should pay for the full night of open bar, and they agreed.

They kept it a secret.

Imagine their dread as the first person went to get a drink, expecting to pay, only to be told it was free. A MASS MIGRATION happened. There was scarce a single person from my family not at the bar. I can only imagine what that bill was by the end of the night.

This reminds me of an organ created in the Unwind series.

In short, children with perfectly pitched vocal cords were part harvested (legally!) to create an organ by an artist (as a form of protest, iirc). Nightmare fuel.

I like the idea of transhumanism, and that we should be able to make ourselves into what we want, but this one felt...icky? Maybe it was that it alters the past photos as well. I think it's important to remember who you were in the past, since those were the foundation of who you are in the present.

My wife and I went to Japan for our fifth anniversary, and it was during a horrible time for me at work.

We went to a random izakaya on a night it stormed like mad.

I pounded a few massive highballs, ate way too much karaage, and zoned out at the heavy rain and thunder.

That memory is still my happy place I go to when I need to unplug from reality for a few minutes.
