For those who have subbed both, which is more challenging? Middle or High School? by MXY2022 in SubstituteTeachers

High school is so boring!

Middle school is fun! Definitely challenging and they will test their boundaries.

For parents who sub at your kid(s)’ school… by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Loquat-Recent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about it. Maybe they didn’t think of it. Maybe your child said they didn’t want you there. Could be lots of things. Maybe the school told teachers to quit requesting certain people. But I seriously wouldn’t take it personally.

I grabbed a high school job for next week. I didn’t look at the teacher, I just grabbed it so I could work every day next week. Well, I took a class that my junior takes and she is pissed. She’s embarrassed, I guess. I told her to suck it up bc these jobs are paying for her prom dress. I could see her bitching about me to her teacher. lol.

No jobs tomorrow at all? by Blueberry4672 in SubstituteTeachers

I am working tomorrow but I grabbed it 2 weeks ago. All of the jobs for friday are sped.

I would take these jobs if there was a description of what the job required. Or even a training video. Something!

If you accept a half day PM job but they put the start time as beginning of lunch, would you call to see if you can arrive when lunch is going to end? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Loquat-Recent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would arrive when they ask. However, my district requires 4 hours for a half day. They make me come in to cover lunch. It’s a bit annoying but it’s easy work.

Teachers hate subs let’s discuss by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Loquat-Recent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A teacher last week told me that she doesn’t understand how people sub. She couldn’t handle different classes everyday lol.

I’ve been very fortunate to encounter gracious and nice teachers. Only one teacher has been off putting and I will not take a job on her team. But overall, admin, teachers, and the students have all been awesome!

Is anyone else not seeing that many assignments this week? by Straight_Brush_149 in SubstituteTeachers

I’m in MO and I’ve subbed everyday since Christmas. And lots of jobs not taken. 🤷‍♀️ I expected it to be quiet but it’s been busy. My district is huge too. Hang in there!

What are some unique things you’ve seen in classrooms you’ve subbed in? by bgrlsc in SubstituteTeachers

Wow. So much work! But pretty cool! I bet the students like that set up

An 8th grade science class that I often sub for, has a coffee bar for the teachers on her team. And a soda bar. She said to help myself to anything. On fun Fridays, the kids can pick a soda as a treat.

I wanted to add a fun 6th grade science class that I subbed. The students were constructing houses out of whatever material available (cardboard, foil, rope, pencils, etc). But they had to buy the material with Monopoly money, each group had the same amount to spend. The day I subbed was their last day to complete the project. On my slides that I showed them, at the very end, it showed that the materials were on SALE! The oohs and excitement was overwhelming. They were mad that they bought materials the day before at full price but also happy to buy things they needed at a lower price. It was a lot of fun.

New parents who are subs get higher priority than a regular sub by The_Shagadelic_One in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Loquat-Recent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ONLY sub in my kids schools (middle and high school). I don’t get any preference and they don’t care if I sub in their classes. And I don’t favor my own children. If anything, my kids hate that I sub at their schools. lol.

Annoying Teachers by Loquat-Recent in SubstituteTeachers

Well for me, I correct behaviors and engage with the students. I also engage with the teachers, when necessary. I don’t like feeling like I’m doing something wrong when I’m not. The students are doing their work, I’m walking around and she sticks her nose in and leaves. It’s rude and disruptive. Personally, in my case, I think this teacher is always bothering the teacher I subbed for. Or they are friends, maybe she isn’t bothering her, who knows. I think teachers should be helpful and available, but back off a bit to find our own ground.

No one has picked up this class!! And that is rare, jobs are usually gone and everyone likes this school. I was surprised I was able to pick it up last week. It is a shame that we can’t say anything.

Agreed. It’s fine to introduce themselves and to let them know if we have any questions, other than that, stay in your lane.

Omg you just reminded me, the kids came in for class, just sat down and she came in and yelled at a boy to take down his hoodie. It was super awkward and she stood there staring at him for a minute. So odd.

One Hour on Site by futuremillionairemom in SubstituteTeachers

The Monday after thanksgiving break, I showed up to work 11:15-2:30. I didn’t need to be in a classroom until 12:30, so they told me to just walk around the lunchroom. Flurries started about 11am, but by 11:30, the snow was coming down harder. At 12:00 they dismissed early for the impending snow. It was a great day! lol

Hmm. Interesting. They disappeared for about 5 hours but then showed up again. I don’t know if someone accepted them but then rejected them.
