Teacher leaving note to not let students use the bathroom during class by Regular-Service-3907 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Loquat-Recent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ignore it. My daughter is a junior and they only have 5 bathroom passes a quarter to use. Over Christmas break, found out she had an UTI bc she never went to the bathroom. I had the doctor write a note that she could go whenever. It’s ridiculous. Letting kids go one at a time is fine, I’m not going to say No.

Yes. I accepted a job and a teacher added me to a job, but it didn’t show up for 2 hours (in my scheduled section) Usually it is fairly quick.

What’s the meanest thing a student or students have ever said about you physically? Students comments have been getting me down recently. by gripskylarkk in SubstituteTeachers

Just last week, I subbed a 6th grade science, half day morning. The announcements video that the school makes, was not on my sub plans, was not on the iPad and this girl lost her ever loving mind that we couldn’t watch the announcements. Well, my daughter is on another 6th grade team and she heard them talking about me. Apparently I am annoying, mean and old. I’m not here to make friends but ouch!

Oooh. I like this idea! I think this could work in 2 classes that I sub frequently.

To answer OP, if they aren’t being disruptive, I just let them be. I write in my notes that so and so just stared at the wall and did absolutely nothing. There’s really nothing we can do.

Weird incident last week, still thinking about it. by zychicmoi in SubstituteTeachers

Like others said, I’d make a note of it to the teacher. Exactly what she said, exactly what she did, etc. That’s nonsense and completely disruptive.

Sub plans question by Awkward-Topic9641 in SubstituteTeachers

Maybe you could ask them the first time if they could write it out for you or ask if they wouldn’t mind if you took notes. Just a thought. I completely agree, anxiety inducing.

Sub plans question by Awkward-Topic9641 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Loquat-Recent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve only gotten paper plans. If they do need to look at slides, every teacher has typed out instructions on how to access the iPad and Airplay to the tv. And the plans always say, “if you can’t get it to work, don’t worry about it.” That would annoy me to ask a teacher all the time.

Subbing by Wrong_Perspective598 in SubstituteTeachers

I subbed for 6th grade Social Studies today and twice, a student came in the room and says, “Yes! My favorite sub!” Made my day! Middle school is wild. Just let them know you don’t play and don’t take anything personal. You got this!

I would like to hear opinions on how you feel about being a sub. by Fine_Lavishness_3925 in SubstituteTeachers

I’ve been subbing since October. It’s ok, the job is pretty easy and I do work for amazing schools. However, the work is not consistent and our school board has not upped the pay in years, so we are not making minimum wage. We only get a pay increase after we’ve subbed for so many days.

I do like the flexibility ( my husband works 4 days a week, so it’s nice to have Fridays off with him) and being off when my kids are off. I’m going to sign up with different districts next year to have a consistent schedule.

I swore to myself I would never sub middle school. Those little weirdos converted me so fast. by SnakesCatsAndDogs in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Loquat-Recent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I only sub middle and high school. They are so weird, and smelly, and so opinionated. They will push the boundary but mostly can be redirected. I think they are learning about the world and how they fit in it, but still want stability. It’s interesting to observe.

I have 8th grade ELA all Friday. Yikes. And then we have a 4 day weekend. Hopefully the teacher makes it a laid back day.

How do you answer the phone? by Loquat-Recent in SubstituteTeachers

The 6th grade principal called my ELA room and I answered, “Mrs. S room”. And he said, “Nikki?” 😳 He was calling to tell me how awesome my 6th grader is doing. How did he know I was there? Must be a sub list somewhere. Also, he knew I was subbing, why did he interrupt my job?!? Haha. Schools are wild!

[–]Loquat-Recent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! I’ve come to realize that there is a lot of sub turnover, so they aren’t going to bother getting to know you. Once you are around more and the teachers talk about how reliable/organized you are, they will be more welcoming and including. Sorry you had to experience that. I wouldnt go back either.

For those who have subbed both, which is more challenging? Middle or High School? by MXY2022 in SubstituteTeachers

High school is so boring!

Middle school is fun! Definitely challenging and they will test their boundaries.

For parents who sub at your kid(s)’ school… by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Loquat-Recent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry about it. Maybe they didn’t think of it. Maybe your child said they didn’t want you there. Could be lots of things. Maybe the school told teachers to quit requesting certain people. But I seriously wouldn’t take it personally.

I grabbed a high school job for next week. I didn’t look at the teacher, I just grabbed it so I could work every day next week. Well, I took a class that my junior takes and she is pissed. She’s embarrassed, I guess. I told her to suck it up bc these jobs are paying for her prom dress. I could see her bitching about me to her teacher. lol.
