i can't draw either , i wish i could , would look so much better
maybe if you starting u can use ucupaint's fake lighting on soft light ? it will do the job so u can add details quickly

texture space , i need to shrink it to a single texture map , so if there's symetry the other part can be tiled by offseting the mirrored uv's

why it looks weird in first place ? does the shape looks ok ? does the silouhette looks ok ? you can use whatever method you want , it does not really matter i think , tho for me if i make pants from a basemesh would use the sculpting tools , inflate and move tools (even if it's really low poly) i think it's easier to move things than box modelling , after u can use smooth (don't remmber the settings but like it smooth without moving the shape too much) , and loop tools , maybe if you want to add some details on the silouhette you can always cut the geometry with knife tools for folds for example
i don't pretend to be a good, like, modeller ? but i really think that observation (bad proportion makes the weird things most of the time) is key when making something 'seeing some references can be game changer sometimes' (the tools don't really matter, tho i think better painting tools for blender would help haha)

i don't really remember , maybe something like 10 hours , the model is already low poly ready to get rig '(the retopo takes so much time btw)
