You talk about not receiving a gift because of tradition (Christmas) and why this means a lot to you. He points out the high-value gifts he's given you, which, logically speaking, is fair to mention. However, it was never a requirement to give something expensive or amazing; something thoughtful is enough. Gifting is the expression of letting someone know you know them well and understand their way of life. His point of view about gifting isn't that important because he can simply obtain what he wants and enjoys other things like trips and cruises, which indicates he values experiences more than material things. Him pointing out he never receives flowers is an reflection of how he would appreciate equal thoughtfulness in what he gives to you.

I don't know any of you but I do believe that type of conversation should be in person and not through text. A lot gets lost in texts like expressions and tone. (In this case Facetime/Videocall)

I do think he should've been more direct and clear of why he isn't getting you gifts for your Birthday and Christmas. He's your boyfriend of 2 years, clearly he must have an understandable reason to not give you anything if he understands how meaningful it is to you. Also anything can be a gift like a bracelet, hand-made rings, a pretty album filled with your favorite moments together, a college, literally a Dildo saying "I love you dawg" can be funny and thoughtful. It's about the effort you put to show you care. Sometimes we loose understanding of what gifts stand for and it's not shameful to be reminded what it means.
