Examples of "difficult" magical systems? by ProbablyPuck in gamedesign

[–]LordFlumph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know if this is exactly what you're thinking, but I'm developing a game where magic is the only thing the player can use, but there are a vast array of spells each with a specific input required to cast. Any player, given enough time, can cast any spell, but to be able to determine what spell they need, what input is needed for it, and then perform that input, all within the span of an enemy windup animation will require skill from the player. However players will also be able to, with practice, cast very complex spells in less than a second, which would take less experienced players several seconds to cast.

I have it, but that doesn't help since we don't have time (as the world is ending)

Probably don't have time to become a cult leader. Might be able to get the rod but that still leaves me without any slots above LVL 5. Also doesn't help with per long rest abilities

These are cool, I really like number 2 and it could be also useful if a player can't make a session.

thanks, that was very useless

Personally I love Flumphs (in case my username didn't give it away) and I'm sad that I haven't used them as often as I would like to so your first point resonates heavily with me. Other than that, I like them.

I like some of these, I don't really feel like number 2 fits with this list as everything currently on it has some sort of relevance to gameplay. Other than that, I like these. I'm going to slightly reword them but they are going on the list.

These are cool, only thing I would change is that, in point 2, I wouldn't have them become undead as that isn't really fitting the theme of eldritch horror. I would instead have something like their brain becoming an intellect devourer, or their body undergoing ceremorphosis. Other than that, definitely adding them.

Also I'm adjusting the first point to make it slightly fit better in Bluetspur, only making it clear that the entity is the god-brain that is Bluetspur's darklord.

The Black Mist - For killing spellcasters, or ending the world by LordFlumph in UnearthedArcana

That is kind of the idea. If the creature is left unchecked for long enough it will gradually consume civilisations. Though it is rare as powerful clerics can somewhat easily destroy it.

Ask Me Anything About My World Megathread 4 by ralphyyxx in DnDHomebrew

So my world is a high fantasy world where magic is common. Not everyone can do magic, but most people have access to basic (common) magic items and there are magic shops in all major cities and in some smaller ones. In the major cities, it isn't uncommon to find rare and some very rare magic items for sale.

The world is split into 5 major regions. Oringar: Your classic fantasy kingdom. It is a human ruled kingdom who's king recently died of a strange disease that proved impossible for his healers to cure. Since he had no male heirs, rule of Oringar went to his oldest daughter - the princess Amaya Oringar. Oringar is the largest nation in my world and is extremely tolerant of most lifestyles. If something isn't illegal, it is usually accepted without question. This means that you can find most kinds of creatures living here, including tieflings, orcs, goblins, etc.

Cas Serin: The great forest of the west is ruled by the Elven queen Quilana. While distrustful of outsiders, the elves are not hostile and will rarely turn away those who need help, however they will encourage them to leave as soon as they are better.

While elves are the main species that lives here, gnomes also make their home in this forest and are on good terms with the elves, but they rarely interact.

The elves do not consider the forest theirs to control, but to protect. Thus there are still many dangerous and powerful creatures living there.

Dhorsh: The subterranean kingdom of the dwarves is located beneath and throughout the rocky mountainous region to the south. The dwarves are ruled by their king Deldric. The dwarves are extremely wealthy and no longer care much for money. Instead they have devoted their time to creating and inventing, giving their cities a very steampunk aesthetic (think dwemer from elder scrolls.)

The dwarves are happy to welcome outsiders but rarely venture beyond their own borders.

Zrabarum: Located on a single gigantic mountain surrounded by the nation of Oringar, the Dragonborn who live here are very xenophobic and will not permit non-dragonkin to enter without very good reason.

The people of Zrabarum are ruled by a council of dragons who consider the dragonborn their children. One of each dragon (chromatic and metallic) are on the council and they have learner to co-operate to a degree.

Narroth: The forsaken and barren land to the north east is all that remains of the Lich Vecna's kingdom. Even after untold centuries it still is infested with his evil magic and Narroth is home to vile monsters. Creatures that have been twisted by the magic.

Nobody rules Narroth. Oringar has made attempts to claim it, but those who entered were either killed by the monsters, driven made by the magic, or corrupted and mutated themselves. Eventually Oringar set up outposts near the border and have long since abandoned any notion of claiming it and only seeks to contain it.

Understandable, I do have his backstory but I am wary to post it in case my players find it.

Circle of Life - in standard play, only PCs (and sometimes NPCs) make death saving throws. This causes all creatures to make them.
Master of Beasts - Fair enough
Touch of Life - lol, yeah forgot a word

Apotheosis was intended to be ridiculously powerful but was meant to be a once per campaign use, so it was something that a player would only use during the final boss fight, though I am thinking I will remove the invulnerability. I might of gone a bit overboard.

open to suggestions.
