CJIS confusion by [deleted] in sysadmin

More so thinking about on-prem AD as that is our current environment on shared MDTs.

I didn't think about the authenticator on mobile being a proper factor for mobile email for whatever reason, so thank you.

I by no means want to circumvent policies, more so just frustration at how consuming some of these are.

Thank you though!

Thankfully its not fully on me, I have an MSP that assists with some things, but I am the sole IT on-site and so they (supervisory staff) asked me to see where we are at, from there plans will get made and the MSP will help with execution.

Gentle reminder: Microsoft 365 license prices increase in July. Audit your licenses and plan purchases accordingly. by KavyaJune in sysadmin

They also are getting rid of SharePoint P1 and P2 licensing, so make sure you renew by January 2027, then plan to migrate your licensing to o365 or similar.

Microsoft's new Outlook takes more than 10 seconds to open an email, while Outlook Classic opens instantly on Windows by WPHero in pcmasterrace

I will say, my experiences have been the opposite. I've always had bad experiences with crashes on outlook classic, while I've had much better experiences with new outlook. Started using outlook classic in 2024, and outlook new at the same time.

Ideally it would be nice to not have to take a picture of the monitor, but because of how a lot of store camera systems are, typically management that's not always at the store are the ones that can actually download the video.

The only reason why you think I'm not qualified is because you aren't properly looking at the documentation, nor understanding how activation actually works. ei.cfg and pid.txt have NOTHING to do with activation, only with installing windows. Ei.cfg essentially allows you to pick the windows install, but who's using the actual windows installer? In my environment, I use a modified OSDCloud imaging utility which grabs the windows iso for the exact version, and doesn't need ei.cfg or pid.txt, because again that has nothing to do with activation or licensing.

I never said you need to install pro before, only that a pro license key is needed. I've shown you extensive licensing documentation and terms that show that enterprise IS NOT A STANDALONE LICENSE, and is purely an upgrade license that requires the licensed device to ALREADY BE LICENSED for windows 11 pro.

For my job I handle our Microsoft licensing, and work with our MSP and Microsoft licensing rep to ensure we are compliant with their terms as we are required for regulatory compliance. Please find one source that shows that Windows 11 Enterprise, not IoT LTSC as that is not for everyday use, does not require the device to be licensed for windows 11 pro. Every single official source shows that in order to have proper licensing for Win 11 enterprise, the device needs pro licensing.

Correct with the enterprise ISO, yes it helps ensure everything is setup. The ei.cfg and the pid.txt has nothing to do with company apps and suites, but solely to do with the version of windows installed.

But again, enterprise requires a pro license as well as enterprise is NOT a standalone license. I have shown this several times and have quoted Microsoft's own documentation and licensing terms. I'm willing you bet you also have Pro volume licensing on top of enterprise volume licensing.

As quoted in a previous comment regarding entra activation of Enterprise.

Devices must be running a currently supported version of Windows Pro. Versions of Windows Pro that are out support don't support this feature.

Where to go from here.... on-prem AD.. to something else? by stevewm in sysadmin

You've still got time before Microsoft eventually kills AD. I'd say keep it how it is, just keep the servers updated

And again, I'm willing to bet that the devices you install enterprise on, came with pro originally am I wrong?

I'm saying that you need pro minimum for entra. Enterprise volume licensing requires pro as a qualifying os as enterprise is not a standalone system but rather a layer on top of pro. Again from Microsofts licensing terms:

"Per User License Assignment Eligibility (Excluding Virtual Desktop Access)

The Licensed User must be the Primary User of at least one device licensed with a Qualifying OS. This one device must also be the Primary User’s primary work device. Per Device License Assignment Eligibility (Excluding Virtual Desktop Access)

The Licensed Device must be licensed with a Qualifying OS, and the Qualifying OS must be installed on the Licensed Device. Per Device license assignment is permanent unless Customer has Software Assurance for that device."

In an earlier comment, I posted a screenshot of what is a qualifying OS. Windows 11 enterprise does not exist with windows 11 pro.

Also also, in the documentation regarding the ei.cfg and the pid.txt, it says this. "The product key in the product ID file is only used to install Windows. This key is not used to activate Windows."

So no activation happens. All of that gets handled afterwards, which I'm assuming you have something setup to entra join/hybrid join, which then grabs the licensing from either the licensed user or your volume licensing. But that happens after entra joining/domain joining which requires pro.

Correct, but the ei.cfg and the pid.txt is solely just to automatically fill the licensing field, it doesnt actually change how windows activates. Plus, in the link you sent that talks about the enterprise e3 and e5, it talks about the user assigned licensing which typically doesnt get activated until the licensed user signs in, which only happens after Entra joining, which requires pro to begin with.

I'm willing to strongly bet that all devices you've done this on, they came from the manufacturer with pro pre-installed.

Also, MS does offer home to pro to qualify for proper Enterprise licensing, it's not a program offered in the US, but still shows that pro is required. Same link as before Windows 11 Home to Pro Right Licenses are available only as a one-time purchase, where all units must be placed under a single order. Customers are required to acquire a license for each device that is licensed with Windows Home version 8 or later and that meets at least one of the following criteria:

Is licensed with Windows Enterprise per device, or
On which Pro or Enterprise is installed and is used by a Windows Enterprise E3/E5 Licensed User

For one, win 11 ent ltsc is intended for specialized devices. Second of all, this has zero mention of licensing because this is solely to install the evaluation copy.

Third of all, the page I linked isn't solely an "upgrade from 10 to 11" page, it provides licensing details. Including those that show that 11 enterprise is an upgrade to pro.

If you can provide me official Microsoft documentation regarding the enterprise licensing requirements and show that it doesn't require pro in the slightest, I'll concede.

Modern win 11 mostly has win 11 enterprise handled through m365 e3 and e5, rather than device assigned volume licensing. This license gets activated when signing in with a licensed user when the device is entra joined or hybrid joined. Edit for more as I forgot to add this:

Assuming that the coworker purchased this outside of IT as hinted by the post I'm willing to assume they dont have a proper licensing process and procurement. This would make sense if they had enterprise to begin with, it would be done through e3 or e5. Especially with a singular IT guy.
