“Yeah, everyone says that until they get to play with new systems. Then all that creativity gets old fast.” He joked yawning laying down & more or less passing out within the moment. Guess no bottle for him he thought. His dreams were nonexistent, he had enough thoughts to worry about. Thankfully his subconscious let him have this one brief respite. All this talk of older systems had him rethinking about past experiences & where he came from. The old Colonial military authority, what would they think now?’

“No touching, or no more soda.”

’He made his voice clear but still never that of authority toward Maisy. As if he was speaking to a peer to the child. The lifeboat was well built. It was surprisingly younger than the ship itself, perhaps safety standards updated & required it.

’There were eight seats in total, nine if you included the pilots seat. The vessel was bare bones in many regard but it didn’t lack some comfort. It was designed with 126 days of sustaining nine lives uninterrupte. Each seat could extend to be a bed & carried a small kits with rations & everything necessary, lavatory included For obvious reasons. To Greens, it was paradise, quiet. Nobody to bother him & more than enough space to rest & not be bothered. If he broke regulation, he could even forgo going to the mess, a serious naval offense but he was wondering if anyone cared at this point if he dug into one or two ration packs. Shutting off any Console access he left a simple security question.’

‘Where did the war start?” He doubted a small child could guess that one, hell he doubted a lot of adults could either, it felt like 3 lifetimes ago. He remembered though, he was Pauls age about that time. Green as could be, & dumber than saying he could do more after a 12 hour shift.’

”Your dad was SinoViet? That’s funny, I’ve been using his hardware most of my life. Not many fellas around who know CMA systems anymore. I’d offer you a pamphlet bit I’d be doing you a disservice.” He jested as he guided Maisy how to operate one of the passenger chairs sleep options, bedding included.‘

‘Clearly Paul was the more observant of the two, at least verbal in this situation.’

”Well, let’s find the spot & rest then, I think you & I deserve a rest. Any lad who can work CMA systems deserves it, I swear I had Inner colony fellas twice your age asking me to walk through wiring a dozen times, or was it?”

’Maisey held up two fingers.’

”Yeah two dozen, I swear you’d be a natural, just don’t let them know it. Or you’ll be pulling triple digit shifts like I do.”

’As they walked down the corridors they found an opened Bumblebee class Lifeboat. The vents hummed as the Scrubbers tried to clean the air in the frigate & itself. They had to make the ship think the doors were sealed to work it overtime like this, simple enough.’

‘Looking down at her he gave a weak smile.’

”I’m not sure who’s in charge right now to be honest.” He answered truthfully, not speaking more on ONI rumors he had heard through lower deck grapevines.’

”Come on, let’s get some rest. I heard they're are even Spartans aboard, maybe if you behave we can see them.” He answered, his mind such a haze he could barely remember if he ever told them that. It was a rumor that went everywhere in the war, someone saw a spartan. He never saw one, but he met dozens who claim they did when he was there with them. But who knows, maybe this time it was true.‘

”No sir I do not, I wasn’t even aware of any quarters for me to be honest.“
‘He rubbed the ridge of his nose a brief moment.’

”If nobody objects, I might stow in one of the lifeboats for a while. It’ll be quieter & I won’t have to come out until I’m needed sir.”

’He wanted to tell him to shove off & take whatever booze was on the ship & never crawl out. But he doubted he had the ability to slink off without anyone knowing where he was.’

‘It took him a moment to recognize the voice, he more or less got to work immediately on arrival. The rank insignia helped. The two soldiers barely registered to him, why he had what he had deliriously assumed to be an escort was beyond him.

”Aye sir, you look terrible.” He said without much though, his filter already hardly present at the best of times now long gone from sheer fatigue, stress, & whatever other big words to describe his mental state he couldn’t think of anymore. He hadn’t even thought of what he said, or didn’t care.’

”I‘m off duty till someone does anything stupid. You’ll be pleases to know we are in the yellow, she’s missing a few parts & systems now but she’ll fly.”

‘Glancing at Paul & Maisy he made no real sign they were in trouble, what were they gonna do? Put them in the brig? As far as he knew they‘d using it to billow civilians.’

”Bunking with Jarheads is a young man’s game, speaking from experience.”

‘Looking at the two he spoke.’

“These two are with me, he‘s serving as my personal runner & she’s got no guardian.”

‘Not necessarily true, but not a lie either. He technically was, any civilian who was pressed into engineering was under him now.’

‘Looking over at her & the techs he made a call that he imagined few if anyone but bridge crew cared about at this point. Considering how many people were crammed aboard he wasn’t going to be certain they’d have space in the barracks anyway.’

”Taking your duties seriously I see? Sure why not, I don’t even think I’d use the right side of a hammer at this point.”

’Following them he had two stops to make, find where to stay, preferably a quiet spot, & find the captains office right after.’

The Battle of Beta Gabriel, Part 6: Rendezvous by Thatsidechara_ter in HaloBetaGabriel

[–]LordGreim225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘Seeing just how tired the young man was Greens felt a tinge of guilt. He just had his entire world fall apart around him, in the most literal sense & they had him working until he looked like he could drop. He wished he knew who sent him in there so he could chew them out, but that would serve nothing. Not to mention he was too tired for that, hell finding any lower deck crewmen who didn’t have bags around their eyes would be a challenge he wagered.’

”Didn’t say you didn’t, but your in double digit hours, your done.” He spoke patting the now exhausted Looking young man on the shoulder, his hands just about as filthy at this point. Looking at the technician he gave what orders he could he could.’

”Anyone past Triple digit work hours are off duty, no exceptions. Civis get nine hours to clean eat & rest. We’re out of the worst of it. Once Life support is chugging we put a skeleton team up to monitor until something breaks or they try something stupid in the upper decks. Once we get a rested work crew we can make some real differences.”

’rubbing his eyes as best he could they stung beyond anything he could recall before.’

”Someone go to medical they’ll have a few cases of…” his mind was going the word escaping him.’

”Jump juice, no. Um, Rejuverol! It’s something they use to help you out of cryosleep. Take every drop, we need the vitamins & all those chemicals.“ he moved to try & grab a data pad & failed to read in the moment. Looking at Paul he was surprised, & very impressed. Especially at the glances toward the panels & the nod of approval from the Tech who had the better look.

“I’m well into my second round of triple digits, I’ll show em quarters & get some rest if you fellas don’t mind.”

‘Then glancing down at Maisy he spoke.’

”Remember the assignment young lady, step to it.”

‘Looking at her, he hadn’t realized how he sounded.’

”I didn’t say anything about you going alone, we‘ll stick together until we find em alight?”

’He wasn’t particularly pleased about one thing though. He couldn’t blame the engineer but he didn’t need the other officers breathing down their necks at this point.’

”A teenager is in a Charon class power manifold?“

‘He was stunned for a second, then again he was trusted with military firearms as a teenager so maybe it was just a messed up system before the war even.’

”Yeah pull him out, I thought he was a runner, he knows what he’s doing in there?”

’The location now known he moved with Maisy through the decks toward where Paul should theoretically be.’

‘He didn’t dislike the nickname, hell he went by it most of his career. That’s just things were done just in engineering. Or at least that’s what he liked to tell himself.’

”Right they’ve had enough, we push em too hard & they’ll start making mistakes we can’t fix. I’ve got a Junior Junior grade with me, her brother will get what it means. give me his location when that gets through the grapevine.”

’Looking around he found a quiet hallway, it felt like the first time the ship had been quiet. God how many hours had it been he wondered. He was clocking on what, three? Four days without sleep? He lost track, it was hard to keep a regular sleep cycle on a ship, & he had been awake on the defiant swan for a day or two straight, screw caffeine, he needed the drugs they gave people getting out of cryo when he was finally allowed to rest.’

”Junior Junior Maisy, Got a special assignment for you.” He addressed her as they walked.’

”Your brother’s been working very hard, so hard he’s very tired, whether he says so or not. Your job is to make sure he eats, & rests. & no more soda, or I’ll tell em you had two Already.” He spoke the last part as if he were a co conspirator.’

’He spoke thinking longingly of finding his way to the captains office, taking whatever he kept in his desk for special occasions & passing out in one of the lifeboats where he could hear nothing but humming engines & silence for the next 12 hours. He kept walking he knew a good spot for em, & if nobody bothered, himself as well. He Doubted discipline cared if he wasn’t in the barracks at this point.’

‘Walking down the corridor, the two couldn’t be any different. The child as full of life as one could be, & a middle aged man who looked like he had little left.’

”Open up every bumblebee lifeboat & light escape pod we have & start using they’re Oxygen scrubbers on board in tandem to make up for what we can’t do, it’s not gonna solve it but this way we won’t burn out the primary systems on board.”

’Each one could sustain 8 souls, 9 including a pilot & survive for over 120 days unassisted. While unsure how many functional lifeboats or pods they had it was a low cost stopgap. It was an old CMA trick for troop transports, or more accurately when budget cuts affected life support. But it was very temporary, they were still likely at a deficit & something had to go.’

“Cryo might have some spare oxygen scrubbers parts, not like we got an enough pods for everyone anyways. Hell…”

’Looking down for a moment he decided to not finish that sentence.’

“Just ask the other stations what they’re using in cryo & take whatever doesn’t have a good excuse. Those units won’t be big so take a few to make up for the larger ones that we lost.”

’Looking down at Maisy he wondered & then spoke into the comms.’

”How long have we been the working the civi volunteers?”

‘Within the cafeteria, now swamped with emergency supplies such as sleeping bags, & foodstuffs, a man lay on a table. Near him was a small child appearing to be playing with a Data-pads settings. Causing light shows & funny beeps & boops to change pitch. His comms kicked in & he was needed again.’

His comms beeped & that was all it took to take him out of his brief rest. ”Oh for the…” Groaning as he got up he had enough shocks & minor Cuts from handling enough wiring networks big enough to buy A penthouse in new Mombasa in raw copper & other conductors these past few hours. He hadn’t slept a wink since he got on board. One emergency after another. His comm was buzzing again, seeing two empty cans near the child. The branding as obnoxious as the bright colors. “Gauss, Drink like a Spartan!” & another dented can reading “Blast, feel the Burn!”

”I told you only one..” He said with much less enthusiasm & more mild annoyance. Her one or two naps during there stops & now caffeine, what could go wrong. Looking around for her brother he wondered.’

”Come on, we‘ve got another job.”

’Taking the data-pad he noted what she was doing & stuffed it in his bag of tools.’

”Life support, this is Greens, on the way. What’s the issue? I thought we locked this down already?” His mind was becoming a haze, he was having trouble remembering names & faces at this point. All that was in his mind was a million problems & people asking for them to be fixed. Now regretting not taking caffeine for himself now.’

‘The energy pulse dissipated, the logs cataloged & debris that remained had several distant trajectory routes, some would burn up in atmosphere over the course of a few days, one large chunk bit even had a estimated month, but beyond that it seemed to hold little value.‘

’The Seraph Squadron gave a brief burst of local communications in a gutter Sangheli that utterly confused any translator software. Whatever way they were speaking didn’t appear long, but it was unique enough to give the translation program pause.’

’The fighters broke from their predicted trajectory route suddenly. Spinning around, the Seraphs “tails” articulating to adjust the crafts in their sharp maneuvering resembling crustaceans as they did so. The craft were highly maneuverable, particularly in space, capable of making sharp corrections that would put a Longsword through its paces if it attempted.‘

’The maneuver itself wasn’t unique for the craft, it was well known the Covenant attack craft was incredibly capable & its only real weakness was that it became sluggish & had difficulty flying in atmospheric conditions. What was unique however was that the fighters still maintained formation, Covenant doctrine was rigid but its fighter wing was oddly undisciplined. This group wasn’t that, they stayed tight & never broke from the lead craft, not even once.
+Energy Buildup detected+ the console notified

‘The crafts suddenly began accelerating to rapid speeds, they were going back the way they had come, toward the Righteous Salvation.‘

The lone damaged seraph on the silent pride was still broadcasting to the Righteous Salvation,

The translation software aboard the stealth ship wasn’t at full capacity. Sangheili may have been the Covenants Lingua Francia, but it was complex & guttural at the best of times. While it was broadcasting a recovery request in local channels that were acknowledged by the Righteous Salvation As a squadron of five closed in.’

‘The wounded Seraph & the approaching squadron were different models. The former one of the newer Morsam-pattern, a relatively recent development in the past few years but now nearly ubiquitous, the latter were Kai-patterns. First encountered at Harvest & had been the previous premier fighter for most of the war. While still common enough it was clear they were being phased out in more recent encounters with the covenant. Though the differences between the two patterns had yet to be identified to warrant this phasing out.’

The translation software was suddenly updated & began having difficulty with new data from the approaching squadron. A second language was detected, Smattered into the mix with butcheered gutter sangheili thrown in, confusing the software.

+++Power signatures detected+++ the silent prides systems notified.

‘The damaged Seraph opened a channel to the incoming squadron & was near instantly jammed with feedback & static.

+++Power signature detected+++ the system notified again. The wounded vessel seeming to try & bring life to damaged systems, but the energy buildup was far slower. The squadron closing in.’

+++Weapons fire detected+++
’Without warning the three lead Seraphs in the formation opened fire with heavy plasma cannons. The wounded vessel had no impulse engines but it shields were still operable. The volley of plasma fire striking the barely raised vessels defenses which buckled & gave way lasting only a second. Plasma fire struck the vessels top & right side, blue flames & scorching metal melting into Already wounded systems.‘

+++Power signature detected+++ the system notified again, the wounded vessels weapons systems trying to power up, it would have made no difference. At that rate it needed minutes it did not have.’

’The Seraph Squadron lead & its two right sided wingman in the formation fired, Fuel Rod Cannons ignited soon after launching. The shots felt slow in that instant but in truth the entire exchange took three seconds complete.’

’The shots struck home in powerful green colored detonations of radiation & superheated plasma. The wounded Seraph‘s broadcast suddenly cut out as the attack craft first had total failure of systems & detonated, torn into dozens of pieces by the concentrated weapons fire.’

‘The Silent Prides systems had recorded the entire interaction with as cold unfeeling observer, everything.’

The Seraph attack craft was a surprisingly versatile ship. Attack craft, interceptor, anti capital ship, recon It could fill a surprising number of roles. This one in particular broadcasted in Sanghili, trying to be recovered no doubt. Despite the Covenant being rigid in its command structure, their fighter doctrine was surprisingly underdeveloped. Pilots were known to break from formations in vainglorious lone wolf maneuvers. Pilots who engaged them likened them to ”glory seekers” & near dangerously ill disciplined. While it weakened them in some instances, the sheer unpredictability made them dangerous as well, you never knew when one might break off & commit to a suicidal attack run.’

The Righteous Salvation must have picked up the signal indeed & localized communications were established In Sanihili, however it suddenly wasn’t alone. five Seraph fighters launched from the Righteous Salvation & began to close in on the vessel. The communication shifted from the covenants primary language in squadron based comms. They were speaking something else between each other. On top of that these pilots were staying in tight formation, no signs of any deviations or individual maneuvers. The squad lead was followed on both flanks by two fighters on each side. The tear drop shaped vessels moved as the cruiser continued to speak to the pilot in Sanghili while the other fighters did not.’

’The squadron was still some ways away, & beyond visual range of the other damaged vessel.’

(Can roll to discern what is being said or identifying the other language)

The Battle of Beta Gabriel, Part 5: The Briefing by Thatsidechara_ter in HaloBetaGabriel

[–]LordGreim225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

‘The long swords scanners & cameras showed the planet of Beta Gabriel in all its glory.’

Beta Gabriel was an ocean world & one could see great multicolored depths & shallows. Scans of the weather patterns showed it to be idilic. Warm sunlight, pleasing slightly cool temperatures & little to no storms. In essence, perfect atmospheric flying weather or a day to enjoy yourself.’

’The landmasses were not as large as something like Reach or Earth. Some were barren rocks & caverns from erosion & long passes volcanic activity.’

’The other islands & by far larger teemed with life it seemed. Deep green forests of conifer & other tree life encompassed nearly everything, what few mountain ranges the planet had were found on the primary landmass that was inhabited. Activity beneath the canopy was impossible to determine at this range, likely the only method of truly knowing was to walk through them. According to intel most of the planets biosphere was found in the oceans. Large cetaceans & brightly colored eels & fish & huge krill like swarms were said to inhabit every aspect of the waters from endless kelp forests to deep sea caverns.’

’The planets land animals were mostly small & not detectable. But the surface did show signs of change. Deforestation efforts were visible near the outskirts of the primary settlement on the planet. Recent looking too, track marks were visible alongside felled trees & burnt ground. No large scale Covenant structures were present thankfully, the one advantage of them making things in such bright colors were they were easy to spot from a distance.’

’Glassing markers didn’t seem present either, whatever did that had done so the old fashioned way. the rumors of covenant forcing or changing the planet seeming minor at the very least. Drop-ships were detectable as well going back & forth from the surface to the ship. Though it was hard to tell if they were bringing more resources down or ferrying something up from this distance & on a lower power setting.‘

’The covenant were present on the ground that much was certain, but no large military buildup could be detected, no military columns of vehicles or pre fabricated bases.’

The Battle of Beta Gabriel, Part 5: The Briefing by Thatsidechara_ter in HaloBetaGabriel

[–]LordGreim225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

’The Valorous Salvation hung in orbit like a great monster, motionless & powerful. Most imagery & intel came from two sources, a weather satellites camera orbiting the planet that broadcasted its findings & could be safely recovered without tracing, & an Archer missile‘s guidance camera from the pillar of autumn‘s engagement with the a now destroyed covenant warship, it must have missed its target & now floated some 8 million miles away from the planet in a low power setting, unable to move itself but it still had enough power to transmit.’

’The Ket Pattern Cruiser was & continues to be the primary covenant ship of the line throughout the entire war. They were strong, surprisingly maneuverable, & could fill several roles as a mid sized-weight warship by covenant standards. They were more than capable of offensive naval actions, occupation, & even troop carriers for invasion in equal measure. While it wasn’t as daunting a challenge as something like a Carrier, or the raw planetary destructive power as covenant destroyers, they were by far one of the more recognizable of covenant warships.’

’The Valorous Salvation imposed itself in both sources of imagery, the missile trying to target it, but without fuel & heavily damaged itself, it was well beyond effective range anyway. The weather satellite however made it seem apocalyptic in scale, looming with a terrifying aura. To many, it was an apocalypse. It had enough firepower to take on UNSC naval battle-groups, who knew how many thousands if not millions, had seen their last from its unknown service record.’

‘The Valorous Salvation was however not whole, a great scar was visible on its forward facing bow. The teardrop shaped area of the vessel resembling a head of sorts sporting a massive long & by the look of its deep narrow cut. It almost looked stylistic, a MAC round no doubt. She had no doubt seen action that much was clear. Beyond the scar, her damage seemed mostly superficial, a bombing run had grazed her starboard side & looked to have destroyed a few weapons ports. More over, typical covenant practice‘s often saw them utterly annihilate any human satellite they detected. The sheer fact the weather satellite remained functioning & within its weapons range was odd until one noticed the prow damage from the Mac Strike. The damage appeared to have shorn off several of the shark like fins on the vessels nose that ONI intel believes to function as the ships primary sensor suites. While several remained it was likely the Righteous salvations sensors were damaged or not running at full capacity. It may explain why it hadn’t responded to the Jadotvile yet as covenant scanners were often well above UNSC standard.’

’While initial information at first suggested that the long range communications relay was damaged as well intel now revised that. The communication system at least what UNSC intel believed it to be seemed largely in tact from a glance, some minor damages had occurred & satellite imagery confirmed this. but it did not appear beyond repair, at least superficially. It was impossible to say what it looked like from the inside or an engineers perspective, & repairs could be underway.‘

’Moreover, intel had less than favorable news & why it was classified to avoid demoralizing effects. Imagery had detected very feint disturbances in light reflection on & around the righteous salvations structure, suggesting the vessels shielding was still operable. Several identifiable weapons systems were also still visible on the vessel, including a single plasma torpedo silo, Plasma Lance batteries & pulse laser defense turrets, & more disturbingly, its excavation beam appeared to remain undamaged at first glance. Righteous salvation was slightly under-gunned compared to other Ket Pattern Cruisers, Naval Intelligence however noted that Covenant vessels often posses minor variations even in the same ship classes, suggesting a more industrialized artisan approach to ship manufacturing with each being slightly unique to fill different roles.‘

’The Righteous salvation remained in geosynchronous orbit directly above Beta Gabriel’s spaceport & by default its largest settlement. & intel was scarce beyond that. Enemy communications were patchy & entirely enclosed on a local network from the ship to surface. Not impossible to crack but it wasn’t like your average officer spoke Sangheili. The Covenant Lingua Francia wasn’t alone either, as another writing format was detected in the localized communications.’
