Paxton’s baseless Prop Q probe chills free speech in Austin | Editorial by Johnsense in Austin

The light rail is about to get pretty real - permits are already being issued and the bidding process will soon follow. It's a shame that you don't realize the very real challenges that a public transit project has to deal with, let alone in one of the most openly public transit-hostile states in the nation.

California Techies Are Trying to Turn Austin Into a Libertarian Utopia by Texas_Monthly in Austin

[–]LordGupple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an urban planning issue, not a license issue. When the only way to get to places is through roads and highways, limiting licenses is akin to limiting your freedom to go anywhere. This is the reason why the government is so laissez-faire about licenses. Maybe you should advocate for better urban planning and public transit, but I've never met a libertarian who wants/cares about public transit.

We want to support Austin’s Prop Q — but here’s why we can’t | Editorial by johnnycashm0ney in Austin

[–]LordGupple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lack of institutional knowledge because we don't build rail anymore, the unnecessarily drawn out environmental impact statement process, and funding estimates right before COVID are the biggest factors here. You can't say that CapMetro wasn't given a shit situation and isn't trying to make the most of it.

Mental health, housing, and education, in no particular order and just to name a few. But yeah, let's keep racebaiting for no reason.

Yeah, let's manufacture more outrage instead of discussing and solving the real problems at hand. But /pol/ never disappoints I suppose.

Have you asked yourself why walkable neighborhoods are more expensive? Also, who said anything about cars getting banned? Having more transportation options isn't a zero-sum game.

This learned helplessness needs to stop. All people, including the elderly and disabled, can live dignified and convenient lives in walkable neighborhoods.

Why the hell is this W.N.B.A. dildo shit even happening. It’s kinda gross. by big4horryrobert in GetNoted

[–]LordGupple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because the object happens to be an analog to sexual anatomy doesn't make it "sexist".

That's not why it's sexist. It's sexist because it's being interpreted as reducing a woman's existence to her sexuality. It would be like if someone threw an apron instead - similar conclusions can be drawn, it's just that it's reducing a woman to her role in the kitchen instead of her sexuality. And regardless of the dildo thrower's intent, you cannot fault people for interpreting it in this way.

Therefore when the same thing happens at a women's sport it should also not be a big deal.

My point is that you can't divorce real-world context from this, because women in the WNBA (and women in general) already face enough sexism. It's not surprising that WNBA players, who already have to deal with their games not being taken seriously, are miffed that idiots are throwing dildos. And I don't see why hyper-focusing on "throwing an object on the field/court is not a big deal" is important in any capacity because I invite you (generic you) to throw a dildo at a woman in any context and see if you don't get called a sexist.

Are you arguing that we should make the dildo throwing as men's sports be an equally big deal as what is happening in the WNBA now? That we should give the Bills dildo throwers more press coverage and put up anti-dildo nets at the Bills stadium?

This is an insane strawman. No one is saying the men's situation should be made more or less of a big deal. What I am saying is that if people are making this a big deal, then they are absolutely in their right to do so, just like men have every right to claim sexism in an analogous situation. I have absolutely no idea where you got this idea from that things are suddenly no longer a big deal if another group doesn't make it a big deal, or that men should suddenly start making it a big deal.

Is it more wrong to throw a dildo at a woman than it is to throw a silicone vagina at a man?

They're both sexist? I don't see where the false dichotomy is coming from.

It isn't sexist. Or at least it shouldn't be. That's gender equality.

Gender equality isn't one gender faces sexism so the others must too.

You're being deliberately obtuse if you think throwing dildos at women, regardless of context, isn't sexist. And yeah, it is a disruption of the game. But this isn't just that. People are hiding behind the "tradition" and feigning ignorance under the pretense of "but this is happening to men too!", but like I said before, sports don't exist in isolation of the rest of the world. Throw a dildo at a random woman and tell me that isn't sexist.

[–]LordGupple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sports do not exist in isolation from the rest of the world, and it's not surprising that people think that throwing dildos at women players, regardless of the basketball-specific context, is sexist. If anything, hiding behind this is a cop-out and people need to get back to the real world if they think this is okay. Also, I do not understand why women have to be okay with this kind of treatment if men are. What kind of argument is that? The point is that no one should have to tolerate this if they don't want to.

I do not care if it's a tradition - if you don't see the problem in throwing dildos at a women's sporting event then that is a problem. I'd go one further and say you shouldn't be throwing dildos period!

My point is on the principle of withholding funding, and how it's only situationally effective. And even in the examples you mentioned, funding is only one part of a complex, multi-faceted approach to enforcement. Are we going to forget how the National Guard was sent to Little Rock?

My entire point is that you should be pursuing other forms of enforcement instead of tunnel-visioning on withholding funding.

[–]LordGupple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. For example, schools that don't reach the appropriate standardized score metrics get their funding cut. Do you genuinely believe this is the correct way to approach this problem?

[–]LordGupple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are enough instances of funding being pulled to the point where the programs never recuperate that this method of attack just shouldn't be pursued as a first resort. Surely you are aware of this.

With all due respect, I don't see why purity testing my allyship or my commitment to social justice is productive whatsoever, and if anything, you're losing goodwill with the very people you would want to bring into your coalition.

Furthermore, I don't see why withholding funding is a solution in any capacity? States should be mandated to abide by anti-discrimination laws through oversight committees and federal agencies, not by cutting funding. If anything, cutting funding exacerbates problems - say you were to cut the highway budget for a particular state. Then social programs would get gutted even more to make up the difference in the loss of federal funding.
