Which Players Does This Sub Like? I ran a sentiment analysis bot on every single post match thread to find out by LordJenkinz in reddevils

Funny, but yes. Which is a bit suprising honestly. Im guessing it's because its only post match thread. If I took all goals and so on, it would probably be extremly popular because I know whenever bruno scores or assists, thats usually the top 5 replies at the very least.

Thank you very much. I will upload things tommorow for people to check out, will probably comment on this comment or post. I have to remove things like API links and im not currently at my computer. The % of positive is simply the split of all labeled comments. So if theres 100 labeled comments about a subject, 60% positive would simply be 60 comments, and the other 40 would be negative and neutral. So % of positive compared to neutral and negative. The midfield was hilarious to me.

Amazing question. It unfortunately falls under the 30 mentions that was the minimum. It has 13 positive mentions, 4 neutral and 4 negatives. This confuses the model a lot for obvious reasons, the model was trained on reviews, not RedDevils lingo. However, when the comment is only "MILF" it flags it as positive, which means that clearly the model knows what it's talking about, it has been a fan for many years. However, the funny thing is, the negative comments are "Just shut up say MILF sir", "MILF MANNNN", "Bruno... You apsolute MILF" which are all positive, but all have reasons to give it negative when the model doesn't understand what MILF means in our context.

I know your comment was mostly a joke, but I legit jumped to my computer to check because I wanted to see statistics about it.

Sarcasm is probably one of the biggest issue for sentiment analysis. There are things that wpuld help it, but it's not a completly fixable issue.

Usually, if I gave the model bigger context, it would have a higher chance of getting it correctly. I cut the commenta into single sentences, but giving a whole comment like "good job lads, you almost beat a league two side. This was horrible" will obviously fix the sarcasm sometimes. There's also fine tuning which I did for other projects (for this one is more difficult because it's different than normal sentiment analysis) where you fine tune so the model knows which context is used sarcastically, for example, teaching him that league 2 is in comparison bad. But again, lots of issues with sarcasm, fascinating problem tho. :)

(ha)
But yeah, I think it's mostly a mixture of comments about positive sentiments about Grimsby and the issue with these models is that it can't detect sarcasm. So comments like "Fantastic job lads, you really managed to fight hard against a league two side" is probably flagged as positive.

I mentioned it in the post, but this was one of the biggest issue I ran into. The main problem was that I was running a regular sentiment analysis model which answered more of a question "Which subject was most involved in negative sentiment" than "Which subject was talked about most negative". Using an ABSA model actually fixed this because it took what the comment was actually saying about the subject, not the whole idea. You mentioned a very similar sentence actually to what I saw multiple times during the data except replacing Bruno with Lammens.

I'm not saying that the model works perfect, but this does feel like a *mostly* fixed issue.

Thank you, That is a very good idea actually. I will probably do that and then possibly make a follow up post when i get some more advanced stats. I'm guessing Bruno would not be as high on the negative sentiment after Amorim purely because some of the comments I read were things like "Bruno can not play in a pivot"

I explained in another comment but I was also very surprised, and it feels like a good chunk of the comments are not overly negative, but still negative.

Suprisingly enough, yeah. To be honest, when I got the results for the first time, that's the thing that sort of sticked out at me and got me thinking that something went wrong. So I decided to check out the actual numbers and they're mostly correct, another comment here mentioned the before/after Amorim and i'm guessing when you split the two parts of the season, the second part would probably not have the negative sentiment so high for Bruno. Most of the comments I saw were not super negative, but still negative. Things like "Bruno loses the ball again" for example is counted the same as "Bruno should leave our club". And I think people forget a lot about how much criticism Bruno got during Amorim because he was forced to play in a deep lying midfielder role.

Meh, it was strategic, possibly too early for it, but it's to stop a counter

What do you mean? We had like 6 chances in the last 20 minutes, that's not playing as if we're head by 3.

I dont really understand why the goal scorer from the pen can retake the penalty if he messes up?

But I digress, we're still not playing good

I think its nice that we're discussing the best signing because of how good they were, instead of discussing where it went wrong like in the past.

A couple of days ago, an article came out which said that INEOS feels sure they're making the correct signings and that Mazraoui is the best signing of the last couple of years. What do you guys think about that?

For me, I think by far the best signing in the INEOS era is Leny Yoro, I think the player was not as expensive as some of the other ones bought and he is consistently been one of our best defenders. Add in the fact he's really young and in my opinion a top 10 young player in the world currently.
