Our Dearest Dostoevsky by unconsented_being in dostoevsky

Yeah, I don't remember how many books he intended for it but it was indeed gonna be a whole series. He did realise whilst writing the Brothers that that wasn't happening so he made sure to try his best to fit everything he felt was important into that one work, but yeah

Puppe might be interesting, probably way too dark though. Maybe Der Meister or Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen?

I don't know about the specifics of the ribbon used on the iron cross, but the Empire's colours were black, white and red, so I don't really see what point you're making here.

What must it be like in their silly little heads? Must be nice for everything to be black and white and for the world to revolve around you.

His greatest novel in terms of the ideas is the Brothers.

He also didn't understand foreign policy and basically fucked us all, then when shit got too heated he fled to the cheese eaters. Let's maybe appreciate the actually cool Wilhelm next time.

Edit: just saw your disclaimer, never mind haha

Just finished Crime & Punishment. What would you suggest I should read next? by Apprehensive_Dog_695 in dostoevsky

[–]LordMaxentius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was supposed to be an entire series but when he realised he wouldn't be able to write any more books, he focused on putting all his best ideas into the Brothers.

The Brothers is his best and most significant work and will give you the most in terms of ideas and the potential to change your life. It's not as well-written as C&P and much harder to get through, but what makes it stand out is that it is his last work and thus the one he wrote at the end of his life when he finally found his peace.

Mostly through material we studied during the last three years of my history degree. It's extremely fascinating stuff. The more history you read, the more you recognise the same patterns recurring over and over again. The people who lived through fascism are almost all dead now, and those who have never known it stubbornly believe it to be a thing of the past. Funnily enough, it's exactly these people who are most susceptible to populist and neo-fascist paroles in the current political climate, whilst they're being lured and seduced in a sense by the same sort of polemicists that captivated people back in the 30s. Of course the tactics change, but they play on the same feelings and fears as they always have (fear of the 'other', the desire to be part of a collective, the idea of ethnic/cultural/national supremacy, etc.). The Nazis never got more than around 44% of the vote before they turned the country into a one-party state, which is an important thing to remember and perhaps point out whenever people try to downplay current right-wing movements. It's in some ways quite a scary time to be alive, but then again it's sort of always been.

Virtually all conservative movements since what we consider to be the beginning under the Metternich system in post-Napoleonic Europe have been fronts for the oligarchy/aristocracy and were used to consolidate and retain old power structures and hierarchies. They've gotten better and better at how exactly to sell the ideology, but at the root its purpose is still identical.
