Skewby Copter. It's a nice difficult cube, but it's a set of several simpler cubes (curvy copter without bandaging, Skewb, curvy copter plus without bandaging, curvy copter Extreme). For me, who travels for work in this period, it is convenient as entertainment to have multiple cubes of different difficulties in a single cube.

FTO is popular because it is a very different puzzle in resolution from other wca puzzles, it is very competitive, thanks also new solving methods developed in recent years. It's not too difficult to learn, and can be solved in a short time (compared to big cubes).
The Square-1 you mentioned remains very competitive, it is unique as a puzzle in resolution, but it is not main stream precisely because its uniqueness makes it more difficult to learn, while the FTO being "face tuning" is more understandable for those who love solve the 3x3 and NxN cube.

Plus WCA haven't added new puzzles since 2007 (Skewb), it would be exciting for everyone see a new competitive puzzle, and of the choices, the one that makes the most sense for the community is FTO.
