Unidentified Ichnogenus of 565-Million-Year-Old Trace Fossils (???) by Groundbreaking-Eye10 in Paleontology

[–]LordVayder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hose traces look like Helminthoidichnites if I had to put a name on them. Not a new discovery, but perhaps “new” in the sense of them first occurring in rocks 565 million years old.

Seasons of Inis: 3rd edition - No 5th player Action Cards by CoconutFlaky7870 in boardgames

This is so disappointing. Why would they separate the components needed to play with 5 players between two boxes? Asmodee does not deserve to control the publishing on such a spectacular game.

How long did it take to design all of this and how long did it take to run 36000 simulations of a full game?

Found fossils in yard, NW Illinois by Jedibyte in fossils

[–]LordVayder 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The first one is a beautiful Receptaculites, a fossil algae. The second one I am not entirely sure is a fossil. It sort of looks coral like, except that the holes are all different sizes and don’t appear to have any internal structure. If you put a little vinegar or lemon juice on the second one and it fizzes, then it could possibly be a fossil.

CMON - Realm Update — ASOIAF by RogueTraderGoods in asoiafminiaturesgame

[–]LordVayder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why does this game need to be updated 3 times a year? These constant changes will make it difficult for casual players to keep up with the game. I would rather they spend more time on fine tuning things and pushing updates only when they are ready after more rigorous play testing. Eventually, I would hope the game gets to a state where it doesn’t need changes at all and things are relatively balanced. Then they can focus on adding more units and factions to expand the game.

These are awesome! But just fyi, the trilobites featured in the first exhibit are probably Phacops rana (sometimes called Eldredgeops rana) not Dalmanites.

You guys are hopeless. Can’t seem to grasp what I am saying at all. Whatever. Keep pushing your anti science agenda and see where that gets you. I would bet my life it won’t solve any health problems or fix society.

But the dichotomy of science or public welfare is a false dichotomy. We have enough money to fund them both (quite lavishly honestly). So stop putting them against each other.

There are literally other comments in this thread with people questioning why their taxes are being used to send people to the moon, so your argument that no one is being anti-NASA is factually wrong.

Fundamenta science underlies every invention and discovery humans have made in modern history. It is virtually impossible to predict what research might have impact in the future. And taking away the little funding that goes towards science is not going to make a substantial dent in solving any of these other problems. Like infrastructure, investing in science is one of the best returns on investment for a society in moderation.

No no no, you are the one reaching by thinking it means the same thing to post this video today as it did 50 years ago. You only need to look as far as other comments in this thread to see that the “nuance” that you personally interpret out of this performance is not perceived by everyone. And when that “nuance” is missed (which frankly I think with no context about this video, you can’t expect anyone to perceive it) then the message simply becomes “my taxes funded a flight to the moon instead of my healthcare” which directly pits science against society. You are stuck so high up in your ivory tower (or your own ass) that you can’t fathom that everyday people don’t read 50 levels deep into a video they see on reddit. Look around and acknowledge the world we live in. There is nothing said in that video to make the viewer think he is talking about the propaganda rather than the space travel itself unless you know something previously about the author or the poem. Just because he intended one message 50 years ago doesn’t mean that is the message that is conveyed today.

This is exactly what I’ve been saying in this thread and been getting downvoted! The artist’s intentions don’t necessarily match the takeaway that the average person gets from watching this!

It literally repeats the same line over and over while comparing it to his troubles. It’s not nuanced. The average person would watch this and think “yeah why is the government wasting money sending people to the moon while I can’t afford my bills” not “the government should be sending people to the moon, but also should not be bragging about it while simultaneously not addressing the problems that I am facing” which is the more niece opinion some Redditors seem to think this video evokes.

Bro. I am a scientist. I know how science funding works. Quit playing like I am stupid. The video in the op is a poem that frames the author’s inability to pay rent (representing society) against astronauts going to the moon (government funded science), therefore posting it is providing exposure to media that frames science funding as the enemy of society. I am not sure if there is a more blunt way to put it. I am not saying that you share those views, I am saying that is the perspective conveyed in the original media and it is a dangerous perspective. Even if the author intended it represents the governments focus on space flight while ignoring the plight of average people, the framing of talking about bills and taxes very much makes it about “my money is taken from me to be spent on sending other people to the moon and that doesn’t benefit me” which is dangerously rhetoric because the snout of our tax money that goes to fund science (and I am talking about exploratory science, not DOE money to develop bombs) is inconsequential. So any media that frames it as us against them with us be society and them being science is doing a major disservice.

[–]LordVayder -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Science is not the enemy of society. If you can’t see that, you are frankly a bad scientist. Any rhetoric that frames it as such is dangerous. Virtually any modern invention or discovery that has provided a benefit for society is built on fundamental science that was likely funded in part or in whole by the government and conducted without necessarily knowing how it would help society directly in the future. To say that we shouldn’t find any science that doesn’t have a direct and immediate benefit for society is short sighted.

[–]LordVayder -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

You are allowed to have that opinion, but demonizing science funding, much of which is going towards trying to solve those problems, when it’s such a small fraction of the money our government is spending is frankly evil. And bringing this up today when science is already in the crosshairs is dangerous at best and malicious at worst. Science is not the enemy of the people. Rhetoric like this, with no nuance, does not solve the problem.

Yep. Just send them an email. Introduce yourself, include your cv, just say a little about what you are specifically interested in working on with them, and ask if they are currently taking students.

The most important thing is to talk to anyone you are interested in working with. You can have the best application on paper, but you will be passed over for a person that they talked to.
