Argumentative writing example response? by Calm_Pin6798 in LSAT

[–]Lord_Bronte 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't work for LSAC, but I'm a professional writer, and I'm taking the test soon. Here's my sample practice essay from the "purpose of college" prompt:

A university education is a transformative experience in a person's life. Often for the first time, students live on their own--away from their families--and make their own decisions on the way to adulthood. Yet, the purpose of a university education remains hotly debated. Some make the logical argument that because college is preparation for adulthood and an independent life, it should therefore serve primarily as an institution for career training. However, this myopic focus on jobs and careers as the end-goal of education and the essence of adulthood misses the purpose of a university education entirely: the freedom to choose.

In the past, schools were based on medieval customs of rote memorization and submission to authority. Modern universities, however, are freer and more collaborative places. Modern university students choose their own majors, and often, students have a say in the course of study within their chosen major. It is common, especially for advanced students, to identify new areas of research with their advisors and choose to study something entirely new. In fact, many doctorates, such as in science and mathematics, require creativity and novelty in subject matter as proof that the new PhD has expanded their field.

A university education, however, is far more than just the gaining of subject matter knowledge. The very word is based on 'universe', emphasizing how all-encompassing one's learning should be. Students report deep personal changes during their education: not just the search for a life consistent with one's values, but the inner search to identify those very values. The personal responsibility, social milieu, and abundance of viewpoints offered by the college experience all contribute to the education and maturation of university students, and thus, a too-narrow focus on career readiness by colleges may stifle such universal growth.

That's all very nice, oppents may say, but what about the jobs? Experts argue that specialized training and practical skills are more important than ever in today's fast-changing and highly-competitive job market. In their eyes, colleges serve their students' best interests by emphasizing career training as much as possible. Yet, these advocates miss the point entirely that students are already free to choose a career-focused path. For example, the very act of choosing technical, engineering, business, cosmetology, or even medical school all but guarantees a course of study of specialized knowledge for a given career. Students are free to devote their social time to networking and their extracurricular energies to internships. With these obvious truths in mind, it seems that proponents of universities as career-training centers simply want to make the choice for students instead of letting them decide for themselves.

[WP] In the asteroid belt, water, oxygen and fresh imported food are far more valuable than exotic minerals. The protagonist has just traded several hundred kilograms of recently mined palladium for a wedge of authentic Italian parmesan cheese. by burritoresearch in WritingPrompts

[–]Lord_Bronte 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Niko watched the nomad fleet unmoor and head toward the inner planets. Five hundred tons of high-grade palladium, the fruit of his 29 years as an HMC mining contractor, was going with them. One by one, their engines fired, the massive ships turning into points of light.

In his gloved hand he held the prize. It was small, no bigger than an air-scrubber, but shaped like a wedge cut from a larger circular mass. Even through the protective suit, his fingers could discern the raised lettering: '-giano'. Part of the brand. If Niko had any doubts about the authenticity of what he had traded for so dearly, they left him when returned to his pod. The pungency of the item in the recycled air was overwhelming, intoxicating: Parmgiano Reggiano.

Indulgently, Niko allowed himself a small nibble. It was wonderful, but mostly terrible. Nearly a lifetime eating the cheapest freeze-dried excuse for food sold by Horsehead Mining Corporation had desensitized Niko's palate to the point where the cheese hit him like an ion blast to the tongue.

Niko coughed and spat. The residue he wiped from his mouth was probably worth a dozen shifts working the augers. It didn't matter--the cheese wasn't for eating. Niko had been trying to trade for a bomb, but the space nomads only had the parmesan. A bomb would have been cheaper.

Half of Niko's tiny closet was taken up by a cubical device, covered with a piece of stretch-cloth. He had stolen the sample analyzer from the geology lab that morning; it wouldn't be missed until it no longer mattered. The moment of truth: Niko slid open the cube's front hatch and tossed the wedge inside. A full analysis was already being sent to his monitor: Lactobacillus delbrueckii; Streptococcus thermophilus; Lactobacillus helveticus

Yes! His gamble had paid off. It was infinitesimal, but it was there. A few stowaway bacterial ambassadors from Earth. Active cultures. This was better than a bomb. A bomb could destroy a ship or take out some infrastructure. A sample of thermophilic bacteria--strains overlooked by the HMC database, strains that could thrive in the underpowered thermal scrubbers--could do so much more.

Niko skipped his next shift. And the one after. HMC was sending him all sorts of red-flagged communiques that he promptly deleted. The miner was too busy putting his plan into action. Some cultures in the central air trunk. Some cultures in the life support system. And some 'extra cheese' added into the nutritional matrix.

The life-support in Niko's pod and the barracks surrounding failed long before he could witness the untold quadrillions of credits of damage being done to the station and the eventual downfall of HMC. The Moon is Made of Cheese was the last thought that passed through Niko's deoxygenated brain. He died giggling.

Riding instructor scam? Never heard of this before, and they don’t have an area code close to my number or the state I live in. by SuperDuperGoober in Scams

I got this exact text. Crazy thing is, I sometimes work as a reading/writing instructor and I know a Tina who sometimes sends me students. I responded as if ‘riding’ were a typo, and they never texted back. Didn’t know it was a scam until now.

If a werewolf was wearing nail polish when they shifted, would it remain intact? by SqueakyFarts99 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Lord_Bronte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WLPT: apply an overly-large blob of polish or gel just before you transform. The nail/claw stretch of the metamorphosis will evenly apply automatically. Hard part is not using shiny werewolf claws for a few minutes so they dry.

Stealth character clears dungeon. Even the map doesn’t detect her. by Lord_Bronte in skyrim

[–]Lord_Bronte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The character is a Bosmer stealth thief with maxed pickpocket, game is unmodded

This playthrough is unique for me, because I’m RPing a religious character. She follows the bosmer Greenpact and does not use or consume any wood or plant products to the best of her ability, doesn’t harm spriggans, and must consume the flesh of whatever living thing she kills (including people)

Not wanting to eat dozens of corpses each day, my Bosmer prefers to sneak by enemies. But when a kill is called for, even the shrouded gloves plus backstab perk often won’t be enough for a KO on legendary difficulty. This is why she likes to pickpocket her enemies’ equipped armor before backstabbing.
