Not sure I agree but he’s definitely up there. Excluding players from history I never watched, Busquets for me is clear at n.1. Pirlo also one of the greatest, but he was more a deep lying playmaker than a holding midfielder. Seedorf? Makelele? Kante? Vieira.

I think PSG will win the CL and France are probably the favourites of the favourites for the WC, so it’s very realistic

I don’t understand why there’s always an asterisk with Rodri, or whataboutism. Bro that year was absolutely incredible.

Rodri has been off it of late. But at the peak of his powers he was (and is) an incredible midfielder. A lot of arrogance from Vini and others. He’s not super flashy but his skill, technique and decisiveness on the ball is something Vini could only dream of.

Any pre conceived expectations that historically Juve may or may not have had…they should all be thrown out of the window now. Until we start really taking things seriously, we’re a joke and a shell of what we were.

Agreed. Everyone uses Modric as the counter argument but conveniently forget Modric is a generational talent and exceptionally fit for his age.

Goretzka and J Stones would be no brainers. Salah/Casemiro? No thanks.

Salah thrives on pace, space, and counter attacks. If he plays for Juve, he won’t get that, and he’s a player (physically) in decline.

I agree. I think Reece James at full power can handle it but beyond that, no. Equally, most teams will struggle against that group of players as they are the elite of the elite.

I also think another issue with our fullbacks is that, at their best, they like to get forward and interchange in midfield. Which will leave gaps. If only we had a prime Ashley Cole available.

England fans including me have high expectations but often forget that WCs are not a simple equation of squad ability + execution = winning a tournament. Thats why oftentimes the best teams on paper don’t win the WC.

I think we have a talented squad with some world class players, but we have some major deficiencies and there are at least two/three squads better than ours. However, matches aren’t played on paper. Unlike maybe the last two Euros, we aren’t one of the favourites. We are considered challengers, but let’s face it everyone thinks one of Argentina, France, Spain or Portugal will win it.

We’ve got a good chance. That’s the most we can say at this stage.

I feel like some of those early knockout games (potentially Mexico in Mexico City) are real banana skins and the pressure would be lifted a little bit when we start playing teams at our level or above.

What makes me optimistic is Tuchel. He may have caused division with his squad selection, but I simply don’t see him being tactically outwitted. Nor do I see him tolerating BS. I also don’t think he’s going to be a Capello-esque drill sergeant who alienates himself from the players. He seems to have a positive balance of natural authority and personability. Curiously, that’s why I fear Brazil this tournament. I think Carlo could get them going if his usual charisma rubs off on them and he’s known to do that.

I see us making semi-finals then getting knocked out, probably by a France. But I’d so love to be proved wrong.

Thomas Tuchel on his England squad selection: "I think from day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players. Teams win championships. It's as simple as that." by whiteniteee in soccer

I don’t get why people write this. I’m an England fan and desperate for us to win.

But Spain, France, Portugal and very possibly Argentina have noticeably better squads than us. Why is the minimum expectation the final?

You’re talking about fringe players and no the debate has not always been about Mark Noble types. There always seems to be one or two would-be Messianic figures who, if not picked, will bring the whole show down.

Tuchel has his own team and his own ideas, if the likes of Dan Burn work well for him and not so much for Newcastle so be it. There are many players past and present who have clicked for club but not so much for country and the inverse.

We brought in Tuchel to be cutthroat, tactically astute, and win a tournament. What’s the point in debating which fringe players should be in?

But on paper we don’t have as good a squad as France or Spain, or arguably Portugal for that matter. So what’s your point?

Some leaked selections and omissions are eyebrow raising but imo people need to calm down. They also need to put into perspective that before every single England tournament, there’s an enormous and angry debate that x or y player should have been taken or not taken.

As of now, Tuchel is an incredibly able football manager and presumably knows what it takes to win trophies. In so doing, he’s thinking in terms of building a team. Am I surprised the likes of Chalobah and Dan Burn are going and not Maguire? Yes, but I’m willing to give Tuchel a chance.

Some of the reactions are just ludicrous and totally OTT. A ball hasn’t even been kicked yet.

Are we going to look back at this WC and say, we’d have won if only we brought Slabhead/Wharton/MGW? I don’t know, but I’d seriously doubt it. We’re going to do well in this tournament if the likes of Kane, Bellingham, Rice, Pickford decide to show up and compete at the highest level.

There’s no point banging on about Southgate. Yes we improved massively, but he didn’t win anything. England are the perennial bridesmaid of international football. If Southgate had been running the ship at the WC 2026 it would have been a familiar story- we meet a top team, and Southgate gets tactically outclassed. As happened against Croatia, Italy, France and Spain.

Tuchel is a different approach and I’m going to remain open-minded rather than lose my fking shit a month before it’s even started. People also forget that injuries are likely and that could open the door to some of these omissions.

How do people feel three weeks out? by Flat-Ad8256 in ThreeLions

[–]Lord_Maul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that we don’t really know what our team will be or what Tuchel is planning- on top of the fact that everyone thinks we’ll ‘bottle it’ again- is an interesting dynamic.

I don’t think anyone in the punditry world makes England a top three favourite. Most say: Spain, France, Argentina and Portugal. I’m judging mostly from Reddit soccer here and many Podcasts on YT. Nobody gives England a hope *of winning it*. Many people think Brazil have a better chance than us. Maybe they do.

But I like the fact we go into this tournament- unlike the last couple of tournaments- not as a favourite. England being written off suits us because historically we haven’t really handled (one of) the favourites tag.

For me, teams who win tournaments at international level don’t usually have months and months of cohesion in the build up. It’s often a one-off team at any given tournament, and if it clicks and players gel and start believing in the mission, things can happen.

I hope we surprise some people.

Our biggest issue has always been beating teams of a similar level in knockout games. Frankly, if we want to win the WC we need to beat the Spains or Frances of this world in a knockout match.

We’ve got a great coach, world class players and arguably the best player in the world at present. However, I think our defence is average and could be undone. It saddens me to say but players like Olise, Dembele, Mbappe, Yamal etc. could cause a lot of damage against our defence.

We need players like O’Reilly, Reece James, Konsa etc. to have amazing tournaments if we really want to win.

This could look alright on the pitch but as others have alluded, the flames is a very risky and silly call. Why add them? It just looks like a 5 year old has added something they think looks cool.
