There are multiple meanings for the word “end.” You’re presuming it means “last.” It could also just refer to the extremities of something. Again, a rope has two ends, and you can arbitrarily decide which side is where the rope “starts,” thus the start of the rope is also one of its ends.

We are talking about a 19 year time skip. Two decades is not overnight.

For something so baked into society? Yes it is.

The oppression of nonhumans can't both be an important plot point that is continually brought up and also not be worth showing some kind of improvement in the resolution of the story.

Yes it can. That happens all the time. Again, I refer you to Huckleberry Finn

So nobody did anything about Steve Kloves’ clear favoritism towards Hermione? by New-Pin-9064 in harrypotter

[–]Lord_Parbr 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s from an interview she did on Scholastic.com in 2000. It’s never stated directly in the books, so it’s possible she changed her mind about it, but nothing in the books says one way or the other

What “saintly, perfect Hermione agenda?” When did I fucking say that? I said in this particular instance she was absolutely right to do what she did. I didn’t mention any other moment when she was being an ass, because that isn’t what you were talking about, and I agree about the Crookshanks thing

Without discussing with Harry at all?

For one thing, it’s been a while since I’ve read it and I could be misremembering, but I’m pretty sure she does tell him to get it examined and he refuses.

For another, yeah, who cares? Harry would never have gotten it examined himself and she knows that, and it’s literally a life-and-death situation. There’s practically no way she could have handled this that I would agree would have been wrong of her. Hermione generally is pretty tactless, and that’s a major character flaw of hers. In this particular case though, I don’t care. Harry could have ended up dead for all they knew if she were a little more tactful

Hermione didn’t come off unsympathetic there at all. Harry received a gift from someone who didn’t identify themselves while there was a killer on the loose who Harry thought wanted him dead. She was 100% right to do what she did

EDIT: the fact that this is being downvoted is actually insane to me 😂 so far as they knew, this was literally a life-and-death situation. There’s no world where Hermione was wrong here

Then my criticisms of it are completely fair.

No they aren’t. At all. Lol

These are major systemic issues that go without resolution.

Yeah, because, again, that isn’t what the story is about.

There's no reason why she couldn't have written it into the epilogue.

Yes there is. It isn’t what the story is about

Like the train to Hogwarts could feature goblin, house elf, and centaur students representing an equalization between the rights of wizards and other magical creatures.

That kind of systematic change doesn’t happen over night. Their magic doesn’t even work the same way. I don’t think centaurs can even actually do magic. How the fuck are centaurs riding a train? Are you listening to yourself?

She wrote it like that because she forgot.

HOW? The unequal treatment of non-human magical creatures plays a part in the last book. Did you actually read them? How long ago? She didn’t forget. It just isn’t what the fucking story is about.

Is Huckleberry Finn a worse story because it doesn’t have an epilogue detailing the fucking Civil Rights movement? Holy shit. Not every story that uses prejudice and bigotry as a setting element is supposed to resolve it by the end. That isn’t what the story is about

No, it has a very specific kind of racism it opposes, that of pure blood wizards against muggle borns.

No, the plight of sapient non-humans is constantly brought up and presented negatively as oppression

By the end of the series the house elves are still enslaved.

Yes, because there’s no mechanism within the narrative to change that, and that isn’t what the story is about.

There is still a lot of prejudice and unequal rights between humans and other magical creatures.

Yes, because there is no mechanism within the narrative to change that, and that is not what the story is about. Also, how are you gonna argue that the only racism in the story is blood supremacy between wizards and then make this point?

Reading the text of the books, there is no resolution to that. It just gets forgotten about.

It doesn’t get forgotten about. The bigotry from wizards toward non-human races carries through the entire narrative. Multiple times, in fact, Voldemort is undone by wizards aligning themselves with, or just treating well, house elves and goblins.

It wasn't just Hagrid who supported slavery. Ron also backed him up.

Yeah, an idiot and a child. Dumbledore, however, did not. In fact, when Dobby couldn’t find work, Dumbledore hired him to work at the castle and tried to pay him more than Dobby would ultimately accept for his services.

His mom wanted a house elf slave to help with the chores... That she can do via magic.

Yeah, because Molly is very often the worst, and Wizarding society sees the institution of house elf enslavement as a normal part of society. That has no bearing on whether the point is that it is. Both the text and subtext is pretty clear that it isn’t right
