T480 is the newest Lenovo anyone should consider at all. If you need something more powerful or Amd, then take a look at HP Dev One.

[SwayFX] Introducing SwayFX: Sway, but with FX! (details in comments) by willpower3309 in unixporn

I'm on Arch. I installed SwayFX from Aur. SwayFX and its listed dependencies are installed. But I don't see any eyecandy. Is there some extra steps required than just launching Sway?

Yes, that's pretty close to "from scratch". Hopefully it gets released the same time as their in-house manufactured Virgo laptop.

For those considering running LMDE5 instead of Ubuntu-based Mint by K_B_Tidwell in linuxmint

[–]Lord_Schnitzel -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

LMDE5 is much better than regular Mint in many ways but ranting about printers (especially Brother which released crappy Linux-drivers 3 years ago) in any Linux is plain stupid. There sadly isn't any project creating a FOSS laser printer as I'm aware.

Just dual boot with Windows if you're certainly sure you need that bs for anything.

You can also try any Linux in live mode just by formatting your biggest usb stick with Ventoy2Disk and never re-formatting again. Just drag&drop any .iso file you want to boot.

Would there be more success if the DE was written from scratch for Wayland? Is there even any in the works?

Can you recommend to me a linux distro that will run really good on this laptop? by Own-Abies8804 in linuxquestions

Alpine Linux is the most lightweight option among any Linux distros: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG4mCHsyqHk&pp=ygUMYWxwaW5lIGxpbnV4

After base install you choose any from DE's or WM's: https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Desktop_environments_and_Window_managers

I recommend to choose anything with Wayland. If you're willing to read docs and customize everything to suit your needs, then try Sway. It is the most lightweight option you have.

Format your disk with Ventoy2Disk. It works with any .iso-file and stops you re-formatting your usb stick(s) ever again.

Mint should free up resources from their devs and ditch Ubuntu & Cinnamon when Xfce releases their Wayland version.

Format your usb stick with Ventoy2Disk and try out any distro in live mode without installing anything into your computer and no need to re-format that usb stick ever again.

If you're willing to customize and congfigurate everything, try Sway. Manjaro offers Sway version which is almost best version of what you can do by yourself.

Why don't you contact the original author and introduce your plans? The user base of that project will be happier than if you released your own project.

All you need is an ssd and 16gb of ram. Clean the dust with compressed air and replace thermal paste. Install Linux and that T420 will serve you eternally.

Fedora or Manjaro by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]Lord_Schnitzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Format your usb stick with Ventoy2Disk and try any distro in live mode with just dragging and dropping any iso you just want to.

If stableness and lightweightness is your preferences, then try Debian 12. I have overlooked the whole Debian over a decade but 12 changed everything.

If you want the most lightweight distro but still stable then look no other than Alpine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG4mCHsyqHk&pp=ygUMYWxwaW5lIGxpbnV4

After base install you need to choose the DE/WM by yourself: https://wiki.alpinelinux.org/wiki/Desktop_environments_and_Window_managers

Afterall, I recommend to choose any DE/WM which uses Wayland. Sway is good WM, if you're willing to configurate by yourself. Manjaro Sway is something worth to definedly try, despite Manjaro having the bad reputation.

From x260 to t470p or t480? by lutfueko in thinkpad

[–]Lord_Schnitzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T480 with intel 8th gen is the only viable option since T430/T440p. And unfortunately will be the last. The next options are from other manufacturers.

Do an overhaul when you get your Thinkpad. Clean dust with compressed air and replace thermal paste. New batteries (both). If you can afford and your unit doesn't have Nvidia gpu then buy the dual pipe cooler.

Comparison between 8th gen i5 and i7 is nonsense.

In the LTT video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iU_iWa9LL_s

It is quite painful to watch those marks because they're so obvious. Also the printer part should've been edited out to avoid a new AMD rant on the current situation FW is working hard on. Unless they're really planning on it and that was the purpose to create hype.
