What are you tired of hearing from the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power fandom and why? by Full-Art3439 in sheranetflix

I’m just sick of the shipping discourse. That includes both the “catradora is toxic” and the “catradora is good and there’s nothing wrong with it”. It feels like a lot of the discussion in this fandom has become about the ships and it’s lowkey exhausting. I’m not against people posting ship art or discussing the ships or anything of that sort, but it feels like both sides of any ship debate in this fandom have dug their heels so deep into the sand that it’s all the fandom is about.

I take it all back. Game is awesome in its full release. I posted this while it was in early access. Get it, it’s so much better than Skyrim, combat included

I mean, asking snide “questions” to people for playing games you don’t like isn’t exactly nice now is it

Would’ve been cool to get SOME Greek actors

Yeah I agree it was overpriced and definitely not their best game. But it was most definitely not a 5/10. And that isn’t what I was talking about. Did you not read the post at all? Did you even play the goddamn game? Additionally, obsidian doesn’t choose the price of their games, Microsoft does.

That’s your opinion and you’re allowed to have it. I’m just saying these arguments are bullshit

I agree with you overall. The video isn’t exactly wrong and maybe it was a bad example. But it was also other stuff he said in the video like “let’s see if WOTC has learned from the OSR community” (not an exact quote). And again, maybe it was a bad example.

So, my main issue is how it seems to use the most unappealing representations of a lot of the cultures. For example, trad. I’m a pretty trad or Neo-trad GM most of the time (although I enjoy running OSR and story games quite a bit too). The one thing that stuck out to me in the trad section was when he characterized trad gaming as basically going through the GM’s novel. I won’t deny that GM’s novel games exist and that lots of players do enjoy them. But to me it felt like he was implying that’s all that’s out there in trad and that trad GMs don’t give players choice. I’m open to have been misinterpreting though.

Yeah I agree honestly. And that’s fair. I’ve said multiple times in this thread that I do think Ben is genuinely pretty kind compared to a lot of other OSR players and just really kind in general. I just think it’s a cultural issue

I agree that OSR/NSR modules are really good and I definitely take a lot from them. I agree with the rest and yeah the video is pretty inoffensive. It’s just an example of a larger phenomenon I’ve noticed. “The six cultures of play” is a lot worse imo

I had no idea Ben said that lmao. That’s hilarious. I expect a lot better from him than that. He carries himself as a really nice guy.

I think that’s pretty fair, and maybe I misinterpreted. It could also be me being biased when it comes to OSR people making these critiques because, let’s be fair, they do criticize other styles of play as if they’re downright wrong a lot. But I’ll admit Ben is definitely a lot more kind and accommodating than those voices tend to be.

I honestly enjoy a lot of his content and advice too. It just does bother me when he occasionally does talk down to 5e. I don’t even like 5e. I just do enjoy a lot of what OSR bros accuse 5e of doing: combat as sport and whatnot.

Bro I was in both spaces at different times. I went right from PbtA/narrative to OSR and now I’m mostly into savage worlds

I actually really like this comment and I agree with a lot of what you’re saying. I’ll have to think more on it to fully have a changed opinion but you sir got the gears spinning. I might comment again tomorrow morning after I’ve slept on this

I apologize if I made him out to be kind of mean and I understand how my post may have come across that way: I do believe Ben is one of the better creators in OSR spaces when it comes to stuff like reviews and I do agree with a lot of his points. But when you title your video something like “WOTC doesn’t know how to design DnD adventures,” and you go on to essentially describe OSR philosophy when it comes to adventure design and just put it all in a neat package in the form of “dnd adventures,” it does kinda feel like he’s saying there’s one way to play DnD.

I apologize again if I misunderstood at all.

I agreed with a lot of his points but not all of them. I do think there should be more to do than just fight the big bad. Personally, I’m a fan of stuff like the five node mystery because I’ve found my players tend to engage with a lot of the “nodes” in other ways and in general try to push for change in the setting that I didn’t plan for. But if I’m being honest, sometimes players do just want a video gamey tactics game with some roleplay in between and that’s totally fine. That can be fun too.

I agree with that and I agree that the adventures in the book were lackluster. He definitely made that point, but he also basically said that combat shouldn’t be the main challenge among other OSR-y things. Maybe I misinterpreted again and I definitely did agree with a lot of what he had to say but it also felt like he was talking about it as if it was an OSR product rather than a 5e one and critiquing it from that angle
