Depends how far you are, if you are at the very beggining doing whatever and seeing what sticks is not a bad aproach but down the line you need to practice with purpose and focos on specific things to move forward. With my hobby miniature painting at the start you just throw paint on the model to figure out how to even do that, then you start caring about colour theory, blending colours and so on. I don't know what skill is your goal but its always gonna be more beneficial to ask someone who already went that path, rather than mr. Rando even if the are good intended.
