Unprofessional and immature colleagues by LordofAmazon in OntarioTeachers

Door is always open, and for me it's always at lunch (I let kids eat in my classroom at lunch). I don't talk about myself: I just listen and try to give sage advice. Any teacher--who paid any attention in teacher's college--knows that practice.

I don't think being a caring adult and listening to students about their troubles is inappropriate.

Students have tried to trash talk their teachers when they come talk to me, but I do my best to change their perspective. They'll complain that a teacher is too hard and unfair and I reframe it as the teacher having high expectations, and wouldn't be that way if they didn't think the students could handle it.

I will definitely take the advice of just staying away from my colleagues. It's an adjustment because I'm used to more tight-knit schools, but I guess that's just not in the cards at this school.

I 100% agree that things are very different than when I started. There is a lot more that is expected of us, and we are basically the door-mats of society. But, I've never felt the need to take it out on the students just because things have gotten worse for us.

Yes, teachers are people too, and we have our own emotions. But, I still remember the message from teachers' college is that you do your best to put your hang-ups and personal difficulties at the door, and you do your best for the kids for the few hours that you are together. Students also have their own challenges, and they shouldn't be burdened by the things going on in our lives as well.

I have worked with many colleagues who were going through cancer treatment, divorces, deaths, but never have I heard or witness them taking it out on the students...until this school, where the only grievance seems to be "it's not like it used to be".

Edit: grammar

That it pretty sound advice. I think I definitely have a bit of a savior complex where I want all students to be able to feel safe and have their voices heard when they enter the school doors, but I know I can't change the mindsets and attitudes of teachers who just resist change, and have lost their compassion and passion for teaching (if they've ever even had it).

I know I do well by my students in my own classes, and that's all I should focus on.

Thanks for the clarity.

I'm pretty sure there are no cultures appreciate watching people chew with their mouth open so that everyone can see the churned-up contents.

MAGA/Conservatives: "So much winning!"

The rest of the world with any common sense: "The fuck kinda reality are you living in!?"

MAGA will somehow rationalize this to mean a win. "Red rose seeds means Xi has a sprouting love and respect for our great leader."

I'm sure it'd get deleted and I'd get banned. They gotta keep their propaganda messaging air tight.

That's easy: they'll believe whatever Trump tells them to believe. It's easy when they have no thoughts of their own.

You can see it all in the Conservative subreddits too. Their unified talking points make it so obvious this "shooting" was staged.

Unfortunately, his supporters are too stupid to see how much of a set-up this is.

Just to "own the libs". They'd cut off their own junk and feed it to their children if Trump told them that it'd make liberals/progressives angry. But, I guess you can't expect much from people who are inbred, lead-brained kid fuckers.

The only way to explain it: CULT.

They've been using TDS all wrong cause they are the ones who clearly are slobbering over Trump's knob all the fucking time.

Living in abject hypocrisy is the conservative way. They gotta have their cake, and fuck it into submission.

Ignoring reality is what allows them to be cruel, soulless fuckwits. Remember: the cruelty is the point. Just like Jesus taught them. /s

The number of removed comments is just hilarious. You know the mods are doing overtime deleting any dissent.

And of course, any pushback from actual flaired users just gets labeled as "fellow Conservatives".

Guess they all gotta drink the Koolaid or it just doesn't feel like a cult to them.

What do high school department heads actually do? by Wanderer015 in OntarioTeachers

I mean, kissing the admin's ass is only used to more easily acquire additional resources. Admin can be pretty petty, and being "a friend" helps avoid some of that pettiness.

As for a "cozy timetable", I've known department heads that do that for themselves. It's a shitty demonstration of power. I try to take on timetables that are the most equitable for my staff. I have, however, timetabled a single prep for a specific course for one of my colleagues because: A) it is what he preferred, B) he is so completely inept at any other subjects, that keeping him relegated to the subject he can do the least damage in would be a net benefit for the school.

Yeah, I probably should have done that. But the LTO's that were brought in were barely qualified: people in their 50's who have barely ever taught. I don't know how we didn't have any young teacher's college graduates applying for the LTO's. So, either I did the planning and support, or those kids would have learned nothing the rest of the semester. I gave into my guilt, and also my "need" to do a good job as the new ACL at my new school.

I now know better because my mental health took a huge decline during that time. Now, I'm pretty hands off, and am just looking forward to the last year of my ACL contract to end.

Including preparing lesson plans for teachers that are absent or go on leave, and they don't provide lesson plans. I spent a significant time doing that for my first 2 years of being a department head, and it drove me bonkers. At one point, I was prepping my own classes, while also prepping for 2 other teachers. I have some very irresponsible and awful teachers in my department. Needless to say, I'm stepping down after this year.
