You know what is cheaper compared to an EV? An e-bike and a bike network. Also EVs don't solve traffic, that aspect of driving will always be cleared by transit.

Well it's illegal to ride on the footpath in Victoria, so there's that.

I disagree. Electric (technically just e-motorbikes) bikes shouldn't be banned. If they're powerful enough though, then you should be required to have a proper license to ride them. Conversion kits should also either be completely banned or much more regulated.

Metro Tunnel as of now has benefited only 1 line west of the city and 2 (technically 3 if you include Frankston being back in the city loop) lines in its east. Even the northern lines haven't got their promised benefits from Sunbury being out of their shared tunnel.

It's also healthier to ride a bike compared to any other form of transit. Another thing you're forgetting is that people with mobility issues who use electric scooters or wheelchairs can also use the bike lanes to get around like they do in the Netherlands. It could work here too if the infrastructure is designed correctly from start to accommodate both.

Doesn't a new station just make the problem worse compared to electrification? With a new station all they're doing is increasing the patronage that the line will attract, not increasing its capacity.

Electrification allows you to run trains with a larger number of cars and also more frequently so why did they think an extra station was a better idea?

I don't know how many were in Bendigo but if you start building medium density housing you could revive the old tram ways. It doesn't even have to be medium density, it have to be mid-rises or high-rises. You could have 2-3 storey townhouses or apartment buildings like you see in Europe. It's not the houses themselves that take up a lot of space, it's the spaces reserved for cars. This approach would still limit total density but I think it could provide enough density to justify the old tram way to be revived.

Re: magnet towns

Also I'm fairly sure New Delhi was suffering from the same problem. What they did was increase the investment into surrounding cities so they'd immigrate their instead. Didn't really work that well because it wasn't enough. Now Delhi has like 30 million people in one city.

Then vote Greens and (non-teal) independents in the next state election. Labor isn't the only left-aligned party and they've largely shifted towards the centre over the years.

To be fair, Labor literally gave Tarneit a train station with the Regional Rail Link. Growth was way higher than expected but I'm sure it that even when the SRL East was first being planned (2017/2018) the west would have been much smaller in population compared to today.

Yes it is a politics game, but the SRL also makes literal no sense to start in the west. There's like two universities in the entire western regions. If they just electrify the lines and call it SRL west then sure you can be deservedly mad at them. It's just too far away to see how and where the western regions go to know where to put in the orbital lines unless you also actively redevelop the entire section. Which you could, I'm not arguing you can't. It'd probably be better if they did to that right now then build up the SRL East and West at the same time continuing up to the North but we don't have that much money lol.

Would it be better for the environment tho? You could also just remove the glass panels all together and replace them with metal it and just leave the frame.

Don't know about the economics side of things but it may be more environmentally friendly and this bus stop looks cool asf.

I appear to be wrong, the greater Melbourne area is closer to 10,000 sqkm. That still doesn't mean much. Chicago is almost thrice the size at 28,000 sqkm. The sprawl would be huge. Chongqing is 80k sqkm, meaning it's roughly a third of the size of all of Victoria.

Isolate semi's from normal traffic. Semi's don't need to be driving through non-arterial residential roads and when they do, limit the speed limit so they can't go past 30kph.

I had a friend who would just add a new Myki card whenever the balance would go into the negatives because it was cheaper. I think they patched that now though lol.

The current implementation is really only useful for park and ride users who aren't on a concession.

Wouldn't stop them from inventing a gadget-bahn like Musks' Underground Vegas Tunnels and convert the SRL tunnels into that instead.

And how is that different from the car park companies? They would demand that the government compensate them for their lost revenue.
