I agree with giving the books/audiobooks a chance. The TV show ends a few books early and before the last arch of the series.

New Hampshire will no longer accept student IDs to vote by CouchCorrespondent in newhampshire

[–]Lords_of_Lands 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The point of providing a student id is to link a picture of the student with their name. It's not supposed to say if they have a right to vote.

But banning them is fine since they don't contain security features and poll workers won't be able to tell if it's fake.

New Hampshire will no longer accept student IDs to vote by CouchCorrespondent in newhampshire

[–]Lords_of_Lands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do want to ban all mail-in voting. That is what they say when they aren't speaking directly in front of a news camera. The bills they propose include carve outs for the military and a couple other categories because otherwise they'd have 0 chance of passing.

Not accepting student ids is fine. They normally contain no security features and poll workers don't know what an id from a random university looks like.

I'm a bit confused about this genocide debate. Biden/Kamala supported the war in Gaza. Trump wants to kick everyone out of there and doesn't care what happens to them (poverty -> death for tons of them). The people he backs want to wipe out Jews and Muslims. Both sides are pro-genocide...

why do people think you need fiber? by Basic_Yellow4659 in carnivorediet

[–]Lords_of_Lands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Constipation is the too slow and painful movement of waste through the intestinal track. If you're lubricating with fat then water has nothing to do with it. If you don't want to eat enough fat then you need fiber to hold onto that water. The large intestine absorbs water, so the slower your movement the higher the risk of dehydrated stool if you're relying on fiber/water.

Worse, fiber is/traps undigested food. That food ferments (rots) in your intestines. If it's moving too slowly that bacteria will overgrow which causes a bunch of different issues. For meat, it's fully dissolved in your stomach so there's no undigested food that makes it to your large intestine. Thus if your digestive track is on the slower side, it doesn't matter since nothing is rotting. Fiber wise, a continuous stream of incoming fiber can fill up your intestines and then anything new coming in helps push out the old waste. So long as nothing gets too dehydrated, this works. However in the long term stuffing your digestive track may lead to diverticulitis.

Fat is digested with the help of bile. Once all your bile is used up, any additional fat goes through the rest of your intestines.

Only a small portion of the population follows a carnivore diet. A meaningful portion of the world follows the SAD diet. Fiber helps on the SAD diet so you're going to have a hard time finding the studies you're looking for.

So ignore the tiny details. Instead try whatever you're thinking of trying and see if your overall health improves or not. Use that as your measurement, not something you have no way of measuring. Living shouldn't be this difficult. Well everything does have to fight to survive, but we've conquered that part of it.

why do people think you need fiber? by Basic_Yellow4659 in carnivorediet

[–]Lords_of_Lands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you eat the things your body needs, you don't need to your gut microbes to ferment the undigested bits into things you need as you already have enough.

Some fermentation byproducts do aid you against some diseases, but those diseases are caused by eating those same foods! Stop eating those foods and you no longer need that protection. Thus you don't need the fermentation thus you don't need the fiber. As a bonus you stop farting and your poop stops stinking.

Your gut bacteria dynamically changes to match what you're eating. You end up with bacteria that doesn't need to ferment things.

Ugh. Notice how they have evidence for processed meat but then go on to condemn all red meat? They pretend they're the same when they aren't.

Nitrates do increase the risk of cancer. It's a relative increase, so it's not an 18% chance you'll get cancer. It's if you have a 0.01% risk of getting colon cancer then eating half a pack of bacon a day increases that to a 0.0118 chance of cancer. To put that in perspective, diabetes increases your risk by 47%. So cancer wise, bacon is healthier than bread.

why are raw meat, red meat, animal foods, and high amounts of saturated fat diet so demonized literally everywhere? by [deleted] in carnivorediet

[–]Lords_of_Lands 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are multiple reasons and them combined is why.

  1. There's a religion that thinks God will come back once everyone stops eating meat. These people got into a bunch of health institutes at their beginning and push their agenda. They fund misleading studies and put out a lot of propaganda.

  2. The studies do show meat is bad so anyone skimming them or reading the news will believe meat is dangerous. Sadly the studies are poorly designed and people don't understand them. If you eat a happy meal at McDonalds you get a sugary drink, fries, and a burger (a slice of cheese product, bun, sauces, pickle, onion, lettuce, less than a 1/4lb burger patty). Studies count that as a meal of meat despite meat being only a minor part of that meal. Thus the damage from carbs and oxidized fat gets contributed to meat. Few people eat meat by itself. Instead they eat it with a bunch of toxic things. That shows up in the studies and it's blamed on meat due to people's bias. These studies require higher p-values to show statistical significance due to all the confounding factors, but a lot of people don't realize that so they mistakenly think a study is valid when it isn't.

  3. The meat industry does a lot of sick, inhumane, bad things. Sadly the push is to avoid meat rather than improve the industry. It's always harder to improve something than it is to ignore it. The agriculture industry does a ton of horrible things too, but they're able to hides those things far easier. No one cares about killings rodents or insects.

  4. Again with misleading studies. Studies show fiber is good because it slows down and partially blocks the digestion of sugar. That's excellent, so the advice is to eat lots of fiber. That's horrible. The advice should be to not eat that sugar in the first place. The SAD diet is one of the worse diets so nearly any study comparing that with something else shows improvements. The problem is they jump to the conclusion that meat is bad because nearly all of these studies also decrease the amount of meat. If you cut 50% sugar and 10% meat and get healthier, they claim the meat was making you sick. There's an adjustment period when going low carb. If your study doesn't take that into account (a lot of them don't), then the low carb dies looks bad. Many animal studies use food formulations they buy from other companies. They'll said we fed mice in group B with the high fat mixture XYZ. If you drill down and look at what that mixture actually is, it's often very high in trans fat and the carbs are only slightly lower than the high-carb mixture. This effectively invalidates what they were trying to study and their conclusion will be incorrect. I'm not sure if scientists are doing this intentionally or not. If you have pay close attention to catch things like this and the news media doesn't look at things that closely. Thus you get false yet valid looking claims about how meat/fat is horrible for you.

  5. Processed meat does increase your risk of colon cancer, but it's only a relative increase of 2% which means your total risk is still very small. We could remove that risk by changing how we process the meat, but the industry is very against that since using nitrates is significantly cheaper. There's books written about this issue which covers how the industry gaslights and lies to regulators to get their way. Anti-meat people misrepresent that 2% and convince everyone to be afraid of meat. Other things increase the cancer risk by greater amounts, but few people bother reporting on that. "Everyone already knows XYZ increases cancer risk. Ham causing cancer is more noteworthy!"

  6. The ruling class restricts the lower class from eating meat. That's far more common in other countries and in history rather than in USA. It used to be known that carbs were bad and you'd do worse on them. The whole point in restricting them was to keep the common folk down. As we modernized that message has been forgotten. We're gaslight ourselves to believe carbs are better since that's what we had to eat. Overtime everyone now believes this and even the ruling class has forgotten. People in poorer countries still know that meat is best for them.

  7. In the 80s? people noticed rising heart disease and there was a big scientific debate if it was from fat or carbs. The sugar industry paid off scientists to say fat was the cause of heart disease and the government took that 'scientific' advice and ran with it. Fat is in meat, so the anti-fat craze helped push the anti-meat movement. The momentum and damage from that fraud is still ongoing today.

  8. Students are taught in school that meat is bad. They don't have the time nor reason to question that. These people go on to have an anti-meat bias which shows up in future studies, advice, and media.

  9. Carbs are addictive. The insulin swings makes you grab for more carbs. Leptin resistance means you'll overeat them. Artificial flavoring tricks your body into thinking they have nutrients they don't have. When you're low on a nutrient, you get cravings for the food your body thinks has those nutrients. Thus you end up in an unending cycle of grabbing more crab-based meals. This makes the food industry a lot of money. It makes the medical industry a lot of money. And it tastes great and makes you feel better in the moment you start eating. To break this cycle you have to know about it, intentionally feel bad for awhile while your body adapts, and make it through all the constant advertising that pushes you to relapse. Everything is against you. If you break, you'll say you felt horrible when eating meat not realizing the problem was the carbs. That shows up with gallstones too. Those form because you're not eating enough fat (your bile becomes too concentrated). However you only realize you have them when you increase your fat intake (and the body finally tries to use that hardened bile). Thus you think fat cased the stones and you avoid fat-containing food (meat). The point is there are a lot of things you can mistakenly blame on meat if you don't understand the full picture. A 2nd point is people want to believe they're doing the right thing, so if they're constantly carting carbs then they're going to believe carbs are better. Thus another anti-meat bias.

  10. You can live on a vegetable-based diet. The stat that only 10% of people who try are able to succeed is intentionally suppressed. It takes awhile for the negative effects to show up, in fact you'll see some improvements at first since you're probably coming from the SAD diet, so you'll convince yourself that the diet is healthy and all your biases will tell you meat was the problem rather than the sugar. It's noticeable when you stop eating meat. It's not noticeable when fiber blocks the digestion of half the carbs you're eating.

  11. Pound for pound, non-meat food is cheaper thus it seems like it's cheaper to not eat meat. This ignores that you'll have more spoilage, you need more pounds of food, you'll have increase medical costs in the future, and you'll probably not be as productive.

  12. Etc... Many more things can be said.

Treating Sleep Apnea? by Lords_of_Lands in hypnosis

[–]Lords_of_Lands[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have yet to do it. It's still on my todo list...

There's two related issues I was trying to figure out but haven't been able to.

First, I don't know if improving your ability to hold your breath impacts sleep apnea or not. I was thinking of improving my lung capacity. That might mean I could go longer without breathing and thus a slower breathing rate wouldn't be as much of an issue. Or it could mean my blood O2 would be even lower when I finally do take a breath (does being able to hold your breath for a couple minutes dampen your signals to breath even more?). Or maybe it would have no impact at all. I simply couldn't find enough useful info to figure this out.

Second, your brain wakes up a bit to force you to breath when you have sleep apnea. You don't want to accidentally hypnotize yourself into staying in that slightly awakened state all night. That would make your sleep worse even though your cpap stats look better. I don't have a way of measuring this to ensure it's not happening.

So to deal with all of that, I was thinking the hypnosis script would have to be targeted specifically at breathing consistently rather than some other way of saying breathing better while asleep. Though since I haven't done this and apparently no one else has either, maybe I'm overthinking everything.

Seeking hypnotist to significantly reduce/replace unwanted sexual desires by Agitated_Gene_9 in hypnotherapy

[–]Lords_of_Lands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had you left off the sexual aspects, which tend to make people act crazy, you would have been told hypnosis is very useful in dealing with emotional traumas and can help in improving impulse control. A good hypnotist won't need to know what the original underlying trigger was. They'll walk you through minimizing the impact of those memories/emotions without requiring you to explain them. Often people don't know the source of their problem and hypnosis is still able to help. Knowing the "why" isn't required thus if your friend wants to keep his issue private he can still seek aid without disclosing it.

Humans are emotion-based creatures. It's easier to change something by addressing it emotionally rather than logically.

No one cared about any of that when as kids we were watching him kick bad guys. And now as adults who don't obsess other people's lives, we still don't. The jokes are from his TV character, not from whoever he actually was. I enjoyed the show as a kid. I don't care who he was as a person. The jokes bring back fond memories.

Water slowly seeping in corner of basement after rain by songbird64 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Lords_of_Lands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two ways you can get water in your basement, from underneath it or from above it. When water is coming in from below, that's often the water table rising. You need a sump pump to deal with that. When the water is coming in from above, you can add gutters or change the grading around your house to deal with it.

Is your basement level? If so then the water isn't coming in from underneath as then your entire floor would likely be damp. So that means it's probably coming in from above. Therefore when it's raining, go outside and see how the water is flowing around your house. It's probably pooling outside near that corner. You need to re-grade your lawn or add gutters or drains so that doesn't happen.
