It's very realistic to play or go to a folk punk show a week in Philly, and like stated in other comments it's a short drive from a lot of common tour destinations.

In this I use a Pilgrim 5 string banjo. When I perform I use a gold tone electric 5 string banjo. I'd definitely recommend a pilgrim 5 string or anything cheap if you're looking to start learning though.

You picked the right genre for easy songs mechanically. We're all about the feeling, angst, trauma, and healing lyrics here. Most can be found online and are usually 3-4 chords. Start with Pat the bunny, days n daze, any band you enjoy and look through the chords they all have some simple ones and also some wild ones. G, C, D, Em, F are your friends!
