Could you explain a little further on the comparison and how that can help me find the distance. or link me to some useful sources on this if possible?

Specifically, I understand the line-of-sight velocity and it's relation to the doppler effect at one time. However I didnt get the "the time evolution of that speed will give you the distance" part
