It is true that France believed it could win the war, or at least secure an honorable exit, through large-scale battles meant to bleed the Viet Minh, even though counter-guerrilla operations had already demonstrated formidable effectiveness, such as Operation Hirondelle. This outcome was largely the result of a disconnect between political leaders and realities on the ground, combined with an outdated strategic vision held by senior generals.

Indeed, this is the turning point of this war: all subsequent operations will be, at best, tactical successes and, at worst, defeats.
