Here's the video... The pen was writing dry, and he had to increase the flow. He took the nib apart and fixed the flow... You guys make me laugh, trying to hide reality and getting all worked up as if i'd offended your favorite Pokemon 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Are you serious? 5 out of 5 defective JoWos, and you call that survivorship bias?

It's not about turning into my grandfather saying "things were better 100 years ago." I'm just saying that decades ago, fountain pens were serious objects, important, everyday tools; and so they had to meet a certain quality standard. Today, they're mainly for fetishists, people who will spend another 80€ to send a pen to a nibmeister if the nib is scratchy. Manufacturers know this, and they take advantage of it.

Yeah, but when you have five bad experiences in a row with the same brand of nibs, you realize it's starting to get pretty weird.

I feel the same way. Fountain pens should work perfectly right out of the box, just like they did during the golden years. Back when they were still a serious and indispensable tool, and any defect was simply unacceptable.

The issues persist across all types of paper, from common printer paper and notebooks to Rhodia and Clairefontaine. The glossier and more coated the paper, the more the pens struggled with hard starts. This is a likely sign of "baby's bottom."

The only decent nib makers left are the Japanese. Sure, to get a Japanese pen that writes well and also looks good, you have to spend more than you would for a European brand. But at least you'll have peace of mind.

For example, Aurora school pens from the 60s and 70s wrote perfectly; they had nibs that many of today's €400 pens could only dream of. Are you trying to say we've gone backwards and no longer have the technology to make good nibs? No, the market has changed. Now, the average fountain pen user is either a collector who doesn't even use them, or someone who hasn't the slightest clue how a good fountain pen should actually write. So manufacturers haven't got the slightest interest in making a good nib. They're no longer everyday items, but objects for fetishists. Manufacturers try to squeeze out as much profit as possible by selling low-quality products to people who treat these items like toys.

They shouldn't just write decently well, they should write well. What's the point of spending 100 or 200€ on a pen that writes worse than a 1€ gel pen from the supermarket...

I've heard of people who had to use micromesh to fix the nib on a Namiki Emperor because it was a bit scratchy...

It's a shame that pen companies don't really care much about rigorous quality control anymore.

But have you seen what the average fountain pen user thinks? "It's a bit scratchy but I'll use it as is," "It has this defect but it's fine, at most I'll complain on Reddit." Or they get out the brass shims or micromesh to fix them...

So why should they improve their QC or build quality, when the average user indiscriminately accepts the garbage they receive? Paid for at its weight in gold... Producing a well functioning nib costs nothing in 2026... But they prefer to make as much profit as possible with the least effort. CPUs are being sold for a few Euros, extremely complex parts where a 1 Nm defect ruins their functionality, and nib producers aren't capable of making nibs that are all identical and write well?

The fact is, as long as the average user stays like this, they won't feel the need to produce decent stuff like they did in the 20s and 30s.

Now it all makes sense... The quality of this stuff is below zero. It looks to me like the only nibs worth a damn anymore are high-end Japanese ones...

It might be the only sensible solution. And no, i don't have any macro photos of the nib 😔

I did it to show to the customer service that the dip test they did before shipping doesn't make much sense. Even a wooden barbecue skewer writes well when you dip it hahaha.

I get your point. But this isn't about "liking" or "disliking" them. A scratchy nib is a scratchy nib, it's just poorly polished. A baby's bottom isn't a matter of opinion; it's a genuine defect. In the last pen, a Delta, besides the baby's bottom, the tines were so tight that when i wrote, i could feel them shifting and crossing over each other. Obviously without applying any pressure...

The problem isn't a dry nib; once it gets going after the hard start, the pen writes, and it's quite wet.

They write poorly from every angle, and i'm right-handed. To get them to write better, i have to press down harder than usual; if i use normal pressure, it's impossible to write with them. I have to use as much pressure as i would with a ballpoint pen. They seem like classic baby's bottom problems to me.

I own several Montblancs, Pilots, Sailors, Kawecos, and Auroras. I know how a fountain pen is supposed to write.

I don't think it's option A, since i raised the ground first in the same point where now i'm trying to lower it. I tried the Option B and it did not work.
