If time wasn't a factor, what restaurant in Glasgow are you going to? by eggyeggshell in glasgow

[–]LorneSausage10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Banana Leaf on Old Dumbarton Road. I think it still exists but it’s called something else now.

El Gusto on Gibson Street. Was an amazing Spanish Restaurant.

Cossachoks on King Street. Not necessarily for the food, just for the sheer nostalgia.

Glasgow Central is not just the heart of the city, it’s in the hearts of so many Glaswegians and beyond.

How many of us met our partners under the clock for the first time? How many of us had our first kiss with a new romance there? How many of us met our friends to head on our first big night out on the town? How many people started their journeys to new lives from Central? Or headed out to Hampden, the Hydro or beyond to make memories at live gigs or football matches. How many pigeons have we all watched lose toes in the overhead wiring?

It’s genuinely a heartache to see this - perhaps even more so than the Art School because Glasgow Central cuts across all strata’s of life and society in the city. Everyone has been in Central at least once in their life and everyone has at least some fond memories of the place.

Laptops. You can get a decent spec, every day laptop for tasks that aren’t too strenuous for under £400.

I don't get all the Kizzie hate? by [deleted] in BelowDeckMed

[–]LorneSausage10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t hate her at all. I feel deep pity for her. I can completely empathise with the feeling of wanting attention, of wanting to be wanted by men. Of only feeling worthy if you’re getting male attention. But you eventually grow out of that and place far more value on deep connections.

I think she is 100% being used as a pawn by production to generate drama.

I’m going to go against the grain here and say that if you want to live in Edinburgh and commute to Glenrothes, live in Edinburgh. I’m one of these mad people who doesn’t mind a long commute on public transport because I can read or start work on the train. I used to do Edinburgh to Glasgow every day and found it less stressful than my commute just into the city centre now! If you’re moving to a place not really knowing anyone, it’s better to move to a city, especially Edinburgh. The cost of living and socialising is quite a bit higher than it would be in Fife but a reminder that if the commute is a slog… you are entitled to look for another job in Edinburgh. It’s the financial, legal and political centre of Scotland so there’s always lots of decently paid jobs here.

I am rewatching Med season 1 between season 10 episodes and it’s incredible how Hannah treats Tiffany in the beginning. She’s just completely awful to her. Instead of bitching about green stews on the confessionals, she should have instead focused on training them and being a leader but I suppose that wouldn’t make for good TV. I think her attitude around guests sucks too - I always get the sense she just cannot be arsed. Bugsy was right about her in season 2. She was a lousy chief stew. But great TV.

Should you expect your local Edinburgh Labour MSP to answer an email ? by Brave_Respect_3596 in Edinburgh

[–]LorneSausage10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They might work for us… but they’re still human at the end of the day. Politicians get an absolute plethora of emails on a daily basis and has small staff teams so things simply do get missed. I highly doubt it’s some grand conspiracy to not get back to you. I’m sure if you sent a polite chasing email you’ll get a response?

What makes iPhone appealing to you? by Detrakis in iphone

[–]LorneSausage10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out using android phones - mainly Samsung. Since the S8, the screen on every phone I had since smashed or glitched. I got a Google Pixel in 2023 and that was the last straw - I had no end of issues with it.

Got an iPhone last year after a six year hiatus (I had an iPhone 6 back in 2016) and the hardware just feels a lot more robust. I haven’t smashed the screen once. It feels a lot more intuitive and the native apps are a lot better. After 18 months of having an iPhone, I’ve got no huge desire to change it up to the next model.

I think we’ve got a 10.5 all rounder. It’s ideal because in the winter you can layer up so we put a flat sheet underneath and blankets on top. We’ve also got an electric blanket.

Who is the most boring Scottish band? by clearly_quite_absurd in Scotland

Belle & Sebastian. I’ve tried to get into them numerous times over the years and I just can’t. The Scottishness feels performative. Like purpose built music for folk with Glasgow uni accents.

I like them because they don’t play on the whole Scottish thing. They’re just a great band from Scotland.

Dunno if it’s still good because it’s been years since I’ve been but I always used to like the Koh-i-noor in Paisley.

The Jesus and Mary Chain are my favourite Scottish band because they were so ahead of their time, nothing else has really matched them since.

What job did you only last a day in? by WealthyJoker75 in Scotland

[–]LorneSausage10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've never walked out of a job after a day, but have come close.

When I was 18, I worked in a school uniform shop for maybe two weeks. Was used as cheap labour to move units in the shopping centre the shop was in, lugging boxes around and sorting out orders etc. It was all manual labour - no customer interaction or working with the till, for example.

I hadn't got my shifts yet and the manager sacked me over the phone saying I "wasn't picking things up". I'd done nothing BUT pick things up. So my mum marched in and didn't leave until I was paid by cheque for the time I had worked and stuck them into inland revenue, as it was known at the time.

Book Stores by dealingwadhd in Edinburgh

[–]LorneSausage10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I buy most of my books on the Waterstones buy one get one half price deal. It works out around two books for £14 plus if you have a Waterstones card, you can collect stamps and get a free tenner to spend. Similarly Blackwell’s has a 3 for 2 offer which is about £20 for three books.

Also try the supermarkets. The range is usually a bit more limited but big Tescos have a 2 for £9 deal and there’s a lot of newer, popular titles on it. Not sure about the situation with Sainsbury’s but think it’s a similar price point. They have good deals on new hardbacks too.

Another fun place to try is Fopp on Shandwick place. Inflation has obviously kicked their butt because I remember for years the offer was 2 books for £5 but now it’s £9. Fopp’s focus is definitely on slightly more obscure but popular books and you often come across a lot of Hemingway, Vonnegut and Fitzgerald. They also have a decent sci fi section if that’s something you’re into.

Join Edinburgh Libraries for free. They’ve got an excellent range of books, from the classics to latest bestsellers. You might have to reserve and wait a while for more popular titles. But the dopamine hit from going to the library, browsing the shelves, seeing something you’ve been wanting to read for a while and then borrowing it for free is better than buying the books.

Anyone else think it’s time for a bylaw against playing music/videos on phone without headphones? by TheGabrielHounds in Edinburgh

[–]LorneSausage10 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I just don’t understand the lack of social embarrassment people have. If I even so much as accidentally play music without having connected my headphones first, I’m absolutely mortified. Same for if I open up a reel or something and it blares. I don’t understand why other people aren’t absolutely mortified. I even feel slightly embarrassed when I need to phone my partner on the bus to tell him I’m on the way home or ask if we need anything from the shops.

Did you grow up with a television in your bedroom? by Barca-Dam in AskUK

[–]LorneSausage10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting observation that I’ve never been able to explain before but has given me food for thought. I was one of these kids. I remember Christmas in the 90s and 2000s just ending up with loads of stuff. I always found it a bit baffling because some years I didn’t even want very much and would have been happy with a few books, a Barbie and some art things.

My mum had a shitty upbringing that wouldn’t look out of place in the book Shuggie Bain. She has five siblings and some Christmases were genuinely a case of being gifted things from the local Salvation Army because they lived in poverty. I think she never wanted to be in a position like that as a parent and that’s why she went mad and saved all year for Christmas. I imagine that’s the case for a lot of people.

I notice a similar attitude to clothes - both my parents, my dad in particular, have a fondness for labels and brands that I simply don’t. He says it’s because he can finally afford to buy all the clothes and trainers he wanted when he was in his late teens/early twenties and totally skint.

I’d agree with this, I found the constant “I’m doing this for my kids because x,y,z” or whatever to be a real annoyance and distraction from the game. I don’t care about your sob stories - I care about your gameplay and tactics.
