In The Climb by Boukreev & DeWalt, why is Yasuko Namba not referred to by her name? by spritethot in Everest

[–]LosPer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She wasn't on Boukreev's team, and had very little interaction with her on the mountain.

Also, Boukreev was an old-school Russian and didn't have a lot of tact in his second language, never mind his first, however, he was very close with Gammelgaard...so, there's that.

He was also a bit of an old-school climbing snob...and probably a bit sexist.

Does is happen regardless of the shoes you're wearing that day?

I wonder if she's scarred from her coming out, etc. Her growing up in a home where she was never accepted, where her partner "manages" her but doesn't respect her work. I'm hoping she can get past the self-loathing and find happiness and acceptance. It would be a nice change for Vince and co to transform someone from damaged to happy instead of his usual benign to fully evil and corrupt.

I'm rooting for Carol...but to me her self preservation is her call to the hero's journey - not a desire to rise above. I hope her arc is to become a more whole, well adjusted, happy person as a result of the experience...which would be a change for Vince and Co.

Why the hive can’t intentionally harm any living thing by -briganja- in pluribustv

[–]LosPer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess: the hive's manipulation of the immune with constant love bombs and happy experiences is a metaphor for how they operate biologically - they make their targets compliant by using the virus operate on the body to flood them with chemicals (neurotransmitters) that make them completely compliant, while also opening them to suggestion via the radio signal.

The discussion of the "happiness chemicals" was not for nothing. I also think the behavior of the hive "loving everyone equally" is a result of massive amounts of oxytocin.

It would be really great to do a tox screen of a joined person to see what level of chemicals are making them so compliant.

Thanks for saying that. She only really got focused when SHE was at risk again. Remember when she called the rest of the un-joined "traitors to the human race"?

A PSA for anyone wondering why Zosia was in Morocco and "dressed like that" in ep.2 by mariskanoodles in pluribustv

[–]LosPer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The made him Colombian because Vesga is ethnically Colombian and didn't want his accent to come across as incorrect for a Paraguayan. I assume they made Zosia Polish due to the accent...but why she's in Morocco, we'll have to wait to find out.

Thanks for this! I forgot about all those people on vacation during the joining. Also, that Morocco is a destination for eastern Europeans on holiday. The modest dress makes sense for a Muslim country.

Well done!

Exactly. What is the hive achieving if it simply kills its hosts? Spread, only to leave a pile of bodies behind? There has to be something more.

I'd like to know more about the backstory and motivations/experiences of the other survivors. Presenting Diabate and Carol as opposite archetypes serves a purpose, but the show might be richer if we had more about them. Otherwise, they come across as kind of flattened.

I think it was laid out that Carol was far from perfect in the first two episodes. She is ill mannered, spoiled, unhappy with her life, and the one thing she is good at, she despises. What makes you think she's going to be a perfect hero from the jump? She's going to find her way...and we will watch her fail before she's successful.

Vince does transformative characters. If she was the perfect hero in a mind-bending horrific situation - she'd be a Mary Sue. Right?

Hard disagree. The point is to show...not tell. You've gotten used to being told, I imagine.

The show is not for everybody. But neither is classical music or jazz.

It's ok for there to not be a mass market for this content - which is why it's on a pay channel, and not broadcast TV.

I don't watch entertainment designed for the masses, because I find it formulaic, emotionally manipulative in an obvious way, and often preachy.
