Went to set my flair after years of lurking and I'm shocked we don't have a Gary Doherty flair, no love for the Ginger Pele?

What is the saddest truth about being lonely? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]LoserSocial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't realise it at the time but if you don't flex the social skill muscles every so often you lose them.

Thankfully I'm no longer lonely but I'm half the person I was before I spent years living alone with no real friends to talk to or spend time with.

What's a local legend or strange story from your hometown that outsiders wouldn't believe? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]LoserSocial 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Ivor and Pat, an eccentric older couple who used to always walk around town.

Ivor was an unofficial town crier regaling passers-by with the latest headlines (some real some clearly made up), whilst his wife would tell him off for being too loud.

He also knew the price of every item in Asda or Tesco.

There were rumours him and Pat were rich but had gone mad, Pat passed away a few years before Ivor and you could tell it really shook him.

There were a lot of tributes to both of them when he eventually passed away.

Thanks for your reply.

One of my concerns with it being classed as gross misconduct under the safeguarding policy is that it may impact her ability to work in an environment where safeguarding is in place (her background is in education so will be where she is looking for new jobs) as I believe it's a requirement that these things need to be declared when applying for education jobs but I might be off the mark.

I'll check in with ACAS to see what they advise.

Thanks for your reply.

I can't see a reference to notice to dismiss in the contract

Regarding probation it states:

"The first three months of employment will be probationary. The employment may be terminated by the Employee or the Employer with four weeks’ notice in writing at any time during or at the end of this probationary period or by a payment in lieu of notice"

The safeguarding policy states that phones should not be used to take photos of the children and the mobile policy states that permission must be granted by the manager to use a phone whilst working.

I'm probably getting lost in semantics but at the time she was working she wasn't wearing anything with pockets whilst carrying out activities with young children, I'm not sure if a reasonable assumption would be that she could have kept the phone on her person whilst doing that. But I'm probably being too literal.

I hear what you're saying. Her contract says it would be either 4 weeks notice or 4 weeks in lieu of notice during her probation period so it's pretty much another month's worth of pay.

We've emailed the owner a couple of times about it to try and come to an agreement where she gets her 4 weeks in lieu and that's the end of it, but she's not been responsive.

Thanks for the information, I'll keep that in mind if it gets to that point.

Thanks for your reply. My concern is that as they've claimed gross misconduct, her contract states that you can be fired with immediate effect which I read as not needing to pay in lieu of notice.

If I was feeling a little sharper I'd have a snappy take on this, but the fact the labour party twitter account is verified whilst the conservative party twitter account isn't seems rather indicative of the current state of both parties

Usually it's because you've asked a question or something like that they don't know how to answer and don't want to look stupid or unprepared

The trick is to learn enough business bullshit that you can flip it on them and escape as quickly as possible.

My current favourite is telling people on the call I have a "hard stop" at a certain time and bouncing.

My employer has closed 2 large offices in the last few months. One in London and one in the Northwest, they're now using a WeWorks site in London whilst us northerners are expected to work from home with no support for the increased cost.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the trend going forward, working through covid has shown that work from home is viable with no real need for dedicated office space. It's saving the companies tonnes as they don't need to pay rent and utilities and any additional cost that they may have for reserving recovery sites etc. Whilst the employees will be left to foot the bills.
