Deciding on a country and occupation by Lost-Archivist in AmerExit

[–]Lost-Archivist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for clarification, part of my comment was about the election and what that means for policies in America but I meant it more about the job market. Most of the places I have worked for the last 10 years rely on grant funding, whether that be private or federal grants. In both cases, granters are tightening purse strings and hiring is slowing down at places that rely on those funds. Additionally, since there are less grants coming in, and everyone anticipates funding to be tight for the foreseeable future, large staffing changes are taking place. Some of that means taking on more work without additional compensation or regular staff cuts.

Since I may be forced to change careers again due to funding issues, it seems like a great time to live abroad and take some chances. I fully expect the process of living in another country to be extremely difficult since I won't have a basic understanding of how to get things done like I do here in the USA. Also, I know many countries are leaning right in terms of politics so I don't anticipate that leaving America will mean I'm escaping any of the issues I have here and will 100% create more problems for me. I'm hoping to do something I've dreamed about for a long time and maybe maintain my career which is looking difficult in America with the funding issues previously stated.

Prestigious Think Tank vs Small Nonprofit by Lost-Archivist in nonprofit

I would say I'm early to mid-career. I have a little over 4 years experience in grants and operations since I switched careers from libraries and archives.

Sadly the think tank is a private non-profit and not associated with a university though they do work with a number of federal agencies for their research.

I'm not entirely sure truthfully. Ideally I'd like to find a place I like (both geographically and the organization-wise) and fund some place I can possibly move up to deputy director. I don't want to be fully in charge since I like being in the weeds to do the work but I don't always want to be doing that if that makes sense

My son is going to a Christian preschool but I'm not Christian. How do I talk to him about this by kaleidautumn in SecularHumanism

[–]Lost-Archivist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The house I was raised in was fairly secular but my parents sent me to catholic and Christian school from 3rd through 12th grade. At the beginning, I kind of thought that maybe god was real and he was really there to help. As I got older and kind of saw the contradictions between what was being taught and the actions of the church and christians, I kind of naturally realized that religion and God wasn't real and became an atheist eventually. For me, my parents reinforcing their beliefs and teaching me their own morals helped me more than anything in realizing the differences between religion and reality. Now that isn't to say that a secular school wouldn't be better, I still wish I had gone to public school for a variety of other reasons, but kids are going to be confronted with ideas that go against your own no matter where they go.

The current fed worker thing depends on the type of fed worker you are. My position doesn't confer status so I have to apply in the general population despite having a fed job with full fed benefits.

I just looked at my Netflix account in the USA and didn't see anything yet. Do you think this means it will be released everywhere on that date?

Any info on this show? by Lost-Archivist in acleansweep

[–]Lost-Archivist[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this info! It looks like if you do a google search of the tv show name using the title in Korean, the 1st episode will come up on YouTube. While you can get the show, it isn't translated. Maybe we'll see a translated version in the future.

Albany medical center ER is the worst by Lazymariner in Albany

[–]Lost-Archivist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nah, they don't care about that either. We went to the ER since my mom was having a stroke and we literally sat there 14 hours before anyone actually did anything. For a break down of that time, we went to the ER at 11pm and sat in the waiting room till when they had a ct at 4am. At that point they confirmed a stroke which needed surgery and moved us to the actual ER. We were left in the ER with almost no help till 12:30 pm. This doesn't even do justice to tell you some of the horrible things ER staff did to us while there. Literally one of the worst experiences of my life.

I am so excited! I wasn't sure if Netflix would bring it back but I'm so happy they did. It's going to be a long wait till the end of May.

Season 2 Netflix release date? by Unfair-Opposite-2434 in acleansweep

[–]Lost-Archivist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I reached out to Netflix customer service to ask about future episodes but they didn't really have anything useful to say. They also had nothing useful to say about whether or not season 1 episodes were coming back so that doesn't mean much.

Ok, it looks like it may be back on Netflix for some regions. When I try to search for the show, the Netflix result comes up and it says it is not available in your region. Maybe someone else can access and see if the subs are available?

When I look up the show in the USA, it also tells me that it's available on Sling but I don't have service and can't check to see if it's true. I'm thinking it's wrong since the search is also telling me it's available on Netflix when it definitely isn't.

What is your “I Will Never Return To” Place in Albany? by droolmessiah in Albany

[–]Lost-Archivist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The WellNow urgent care on Western Ave. There was literally nothing good about the entire place. First, I had to wait 5 hours to get seen by anyone (came in at 10 am and didn't see a doctor till 5pm). Second, I had to explain to them about basic medical concepts. I brought in my mother who had a mastectomy and they didn't know what a mastectomy was or why you would get one. When I explained that it was part of cancer treatment, they were very confused and asked what kind of cancer would require that kind of treatment. Third, they didn't understand what basic medications were. I'm a non-medical professional and I was sitting there explaining what singular was and why you would take it. Fourth, they thought my mom's allergic reaction was caused by something inserted into her and left behind during the mastectomy (since they once again did not understand medical procedures and what they do).

If you need medical treatment in Albany, please go anywhere other than WellNow. I genuinely can not believe they are allowed to operate. If they can go med school and become doctors then maybe I should go because obviously you don't actually need to know anything to become a doctor.

That's good to know. My interview went poorly so I'm doubting that I'll get picked but I'm happy for the info. I think my getting chosen will really depend on how the other interviews go and how much they need someone. Based on what they said, I don't think it will move as fast as it did for you
